Yesterday, Joy Ziemnick took us driving around the northern tip of the Keweenaw, where according to the Snow Thermometer, we’ve had over 90 inches. Today we're driving up and down several of the downtown streets in Calumet. I'm sure we'll pass some place you'd like to see, especially if you haven't been here in Calumet recently.
We start on 5th Street where it looks like there were a number of people out and about shopping. The next shot, we're looking down 6th Street, almost to the stop sign on the corner by the Michigan House and the Vertin building. The third photo is from the other end of 6th Street, just past the Calumet Theatre and looking back toward where the previous photo was taken from. Check out those snow banks on the sides of the road and note how nice and wide the village crew keeps the streets.
The last photo isn't a downtown street, but shows the residential side of things. This is 8th Street. Again, note the height of the snow banks. These streets aren't kept quite as wide, but when the snow banks start encroaching on the actual roadway, the village crews come around with a large snowblower and dump trucks to "cut" the snow banks back and widen the road. We here in the Copper Country are grateful to our snow removal crews all around the area.

THE MOST FANTASTIC SNOW REMOVAL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD LIVE IN THE U.P.!!! NO question!!!!
Due to the warm weather here lately in SE-MI, all the snow is just about gone.
Capt...did you watch the Cowboys/Lions game last night? I went to bed at half-time with visions of sugar plums dancing in my head. I think it may have been the meds, but I really thought the Lions would pull it off.

Those high snowbanks remind me of when the gas station attendants UP there(remember attendants?) used to put fluorescent orange styrofoam balls on the top of vehicles' antennas, so that other drivers could see you coming when you were approaching an intersection.

George L.: I do remember gas station attendants, and grocery store carry-outs, door to door salesmen, when the kids in the neighborhood went out and shoveled paths and driveways for people who were unable to do so themselves, when the local car dealer would bring a car to your home and tell you to drive it for the weekend and see what you think; just to name a few of the many conveniences that have sadly disappeared.

Daveofmohawk,
I was right with you until: "bring a car to your home and tell you to drive it for the weekend"!!! That didn't seem to be the thing in Flint back in the day! And i think i know why....... LOL!

Calumet is certainly snow central. Beautiful pics though.

Great Pix Joy!! I remember the great snow removal at NMU when I was there, we hardly ever had a snow day, but when we did...... Andy's, Northend, Pap's, Remmie's, Flannigan's, The Furnace, The Pier and a few other's were always open! lol
