So if you're a horse here in the Keweenaw and the weather turns frightful as it did last week, how do you stay warm? Just ask Halli Lindley's horses... that's them here today, sporting some colorful blankets. Halli said her horses never wore blankets before, but since they're getting older, she wanted to be sure they are warm and happy.
They sure seem to be just that, as they calmly head in for their morning grain. I love how they lined up in a colored pattern for their walk to the shelter. I asked Halli if she keeps the horses in the barn during the stormy, cold days and she said for the most part they stay outside where there is a shelter for them, but on the super cold, blustery days and nights, she does bring them in to the barn to warm up and thaw out for a few hours at a time. She added that they really don't like being cooped up in the barn, though, as they love to play in the snow. They're really just like big kids after all.

I do blanket my Quarter horse mare, Tia. She is special at age 33 1/2 years she gets the Queen treatment. The other 11 of my horses are much younger and they grow nice healthy winter coats of their own.

Hi I've never owned horses, but I have gone riding. One winter a friend and I rented some horses; the cold air made them very frisky. I prefer exerting myself in chilly as opposed to warm weather so as not to get sweaty. I guess the horses might feel that way too.

Sort of reminds of us the saying that if you put one foot in the oven and one in the freezer, you are----statistically-comfortable.
