Brenda Leigh described this day at Whitefish Point as "wickedly windy and cold, but so serene and beautiful". You can tell that she loves the outdoors, no matter the weather and that she especially loves being on the shores of Lake Superior. This adventure was last week during the blizzard weather the U.P. enjoyed.
It's neat to see landmarks like this Lighthouse under the spell of winter, with the snow blowing around in gusts, the stairs from the lookout to the beach washed away from a previous storm, the pilings in a row all iced from the freezing temps and someone's handiwork left on the shore.
If you take a closer look at the three photos with the wooden teepee on the shore, you can see what looks like smoke coming out of the top of the teepee. Move on to the next photo and you see that it's really out further on the Big Lake and then the third in the teepee series shows the smoke better still. So what is your take on the smoke out there on the horizon? Brenda thinks it could have been a ship out there, but she said that generally when they are moving forward, you don't see that effect of smoke coming out like that. It's more when a boat is firing up their engines, getting ready to leave a port or dockage, often referred to as "pouring the coal to it." So what are your theories?
While we're waiting for your thoughts, be sure to click on the video from Brenda, too. It shows Lake Superior with her "hackles UP" as she described it. The video was taken near Brimley. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Mother Superior in the midst of the storm.

Several Great Lakes freighters have recently been equipped with scrubbers for their engine exhaust gas. These scrubber equipped ships emit a lot of white water vapor "smoke" instead of black diesel exhaust smoke.

Yikes! My monitor is about as close as I want to get. The roar of the beast is incredible.

Hi It makes you think about anyone out in the weather on a ship. It reminds of the line from the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they put 15 more miles behind her

Great pictures of a beautiful area under siege by the winds of winter. I will second the motion that the museum is a very interesting place to visit.
