Bob Gilreath not only has been keeping an eye on all the snow we've been getting here in the Copper Country, but he's also been watching the birds that come to dine at his feeders in Hubbell. Today he shares a few of them with us.
The first three shots are mourning doves, which I don't often think of as colorful, but check out that third photo from Bob, the markings and subtle shades on this one's feathers is amazing. It's neat how the snow is just sitting there atop the feathers, too. The down must be keeping the bird's heat in so the snow isn't melting on the back and head. Interesting how nature works to keep the critters comfortable, even in winter.
In the next photo, Bob captured a red bellied woodpecker. This one is unmistakable with that bright red head and then the subtle reddish tint on its belly, not to mention the distinct red and black barred back. These woodpeckers are often mislabeled as a red headed woodpecker and it is understandable why.
That's a downy woodpecker on Bob's suet feeder in the last photo, with a Chickadee over on the side grabbing a lunch of sunflower seeds. It's important to feed these little feathered friends during the winter, to help them survive and refuel each day. Keep your feeders filled and enjoy the show!

Nice clear pix! I saw a bird like that Red-bellied Woodpecker in my yard a few weeks ago, chasing away a Blue Jay. Red-head, but the main body was more of a grayish color. Never seen a bird like that in the Troy area before.

I like the picture of Woody. But the others are great too. Around my house we seem to have thousands of little house sparrows and a lot of geese.

I love birds. It's so fun seeing them all fluffed out.

We seem to notice that when a man's best friend is his dog.....that dog has a problem!

Beautiful! I certainly miss all the birds we had at our feeders in Red Jacket. Here all we seem to get are the bully pigeons that run the other birds off.
