You can see in today's first photo, that Joy Ziemnick wasn't the only crazy Yooper out in the midst of the recent winter storm snapping pictures. These folks donned their winter attire to brave the whipping winds, frigid air and crashing/splashing waves at the "Breakers" near McLain State Park this past Saturday.
The waves were rumored to be in the 20 plus height range out on Lake Superior, with gusts of 50 mph and more at times. You can see what wind like that does to the Big Lake here in Joy's photos. Amazing power is contained in those waves and I think the one that illustrates it best, at least for me, is the bottom photo. Look at the height of those waves alongside the breakwall. Joy was smart enough not to go out on the wall for the photos, she stood at the beginning of the pier and zoomed in to capture these shots. She knows that you don't mess with Lake Superior when she's all riled UP.

Nice November pictures! Looks cold & rough, and today is going to be a very rough day for me.
I have an appointment with vet this afternoon to take our beloved family member of 15 years Rocco, and relieve him of his pain of cancer, and old age. He's been a great pal and we will miss him dearly. I think he means more to me than most people. He loved running up and down the beach at Little Betsy and boating on the big lake. Thanks for bringing much joy to into our lives the last 15 years Roc, I'll miss you!!

Condolences, UC...that's a tough one, but it sounds necessary and your being a responsible pet owner.

I feel your pain, UC. We had to do that to our "best friend" back in August when he had a multiple strokes and finally got to a point where he hardly recognized us anymore. It is rough, and we still think about him a lot, but we also know we did the right thing. Trust me, it won't be easy during the days that follow, but over time you start thinking about the good times and the fact that you gave him 15 glorious years. And, you can take comfort in the fact you will see him again......
The last photo is a bit freaky with that one large wave in the background looming!

Great photos of a wild day! Thank you for sharing, Joy.
Thinking of you today, UC. So tough to lose such dear friends. They become so entwined with the fabric of our lives. Remember all the wonderful times you had with Rocco. Sounds like he was an awesome dog.

UC, we have been in your spot so many times. It never gets easier. One of the first things I learned growing up on a farm is that where there is life, there is death. I have even mourned for cattle I have considered family.

These pics are nothing short of spectacular!!! Lady Superior is the BOSS!!
UC...God's blessings to you all....it's hard indeed, but the last great act of love for your fur baby....it's all good. And when it's time...your next buddy will come strolling in....and that'll be good too!

UC, I had to have my buddy, Remmie put down this past May. Like Rocco he loved running the beaches of the UP. I so hoped we would get to make one more trip UP, but it was not to be. While we each did the right thing by our friend, it doesn't make it any easier. Thoughts are with you.

"Remember when there were just one set of footprints in the sand; it was I who carried you you when you were not able..Fear not my best friend." From "footprints in the sand". "Footprints in the sand is a Canadian version of 23rd psalm and is often seen in Veterinarians offices. Being a veterinarian I was told by an Anglican priest about the "Footprints in the Sand" and its author of course a Canadian. I extend my heartfelt sympathies on your loss. Remember the good times.

Thank You all for the kind thoughts and words, it helps a great deal! I feel a bit empty.... I believe he's running fast & free again without sickness and pain, I hope to be reunited again one day. Thanks again, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Aww...I'm so sorry, Uncle Chuck. Not an easy thing to do, but such a loving thing to help Rocco to be free from pain. You'll meet again, over the rainbow bridge. BIG HUGS, my friend.

Wow! Quite the wave action. I especially like the way the ice formed in photos 2, 3, + 4.

Uncle Chuck, I have tears in my eyes after reading your post. I've been there, and it's so hard to take. I understand what you're saying "I think he means more to me than most people". Our pets give us the unconditional love with no baggage, and that equals PURE love. My heart goes out to you. Memories will make you smile after the hurt subsides. Take care.

Wouldn't everybody love to witness this. It was like this up on Minnesota's North Shore also. Spectacular!
