When the wind blows, Lake Superior waves really flow. Well, actually they do more than flow, they downright rock and roll as you can see in the photos Joy Ziemnick snapped at McLain State Park. You often see surfers (like the fourth photo) out riding Superior's waves, which is crazy enough, but I don't think I've ever seen kayakers out there riding the wild waves before.

My favorite of Joy's shots today is the first one, with the second picture a close second. I love the color of the Big Lake in the first one, along with the uniformity of the waves. It looks like they're marching in to shore all in a row. Then in the second shot, the kayaker breaks the crest of the wave with the spray all around, making it look like the kayak is balanced on the rolling wave. Oh wait, there's another favorite, the fifth shot, too…with the frame filled with Superior waves that you can almost see through at points. Oh never mind, I just love them all, including the last picture, in which Joy captured Sherlock and Jim sitting on the shore enjoying the show!

Oh my goodness! We saw surfers UP there last fall
but the waves weren't quite as big as that! What a
thrill to just get to watch them!! Thanks for
sharing!!

And no sharks or jelly fish to watch for. What do people see in the ocean? I'll take the big lake any day.

I think that the two spectators are the smart ones.

Great surf, wife and I enjoy waves like this when
we camp in Hatteras N.C. from our place in s. east
Va. no Virginia has no surf. We saw beautiful
waves the Thursday before this Labor Day between
Au Train and Harvey on our way to wife's family
farm in Chassell . I've loved the U.P.since first
sight 18 years ago , thanks to my wife.
