Douglas Johnson takes us out to Jacobsville today, to make a kayak visit to one of the Sandstone Quarries located there. From the information Douglas sent, there were a number of quarries where the Jacobsville Sandstone was obtained for the various buildings in the "Lake Superior region". He said these photos are from the first major quarry and there were perhaps 3 to 5 others in the area. Douglas also said that these photos were taken on the very edge of the quarry, where it came close to Lake Superior, adding that the actual quarry extended far north of the Red Rock Road in Jacobsville and is far more extensive than can be seen from the point where he landed with his kayak in the photos.
Just a small sampling (as the list is far too extensive to post all of them) of the buildings that were built with the sandstone from Jacobsville follows: In Lake Linden: First National Bank building on Third St.; St. Joseph Church on Calumet St.; Village Hall and Fire Station on Calumet St. In Hubbell: St. Cecilia's School In Laurium (partial list): A commercial building on Hecla St.; Roehm House on Willow Ave.; Sacred Heart Church (destroyed by fire) on Rockland St.; Dominick Quello Block on Hecla St. near the firehall. There a countless other buildings throughout the towns here in the Keweenaw also. In fact, the foundation of the home that houses my Adult Foster Care Home here in Lake Linden, is made of sandstone from the Jacobsville Quarry, too.

For those who are interested - over at the Soo there seems to be a bit of a traffic jam. The camera facing east shows the Paul Tregurtha, American Spirit, Roger Blough and Algonova all at the same time. I have never seen that many lakers in view at once before. Pretty cool

Peaceful, relaxing pictures! Interesting and impressive how many buildings were possible from the quarry. Our pasture is going to look like the first picture in a day or two. Linn County Iowa is under the gun for devastating flooding. Predictions have us close to 30 ft. above flood levels.

Awesome pictures. I have never been to this particular area. Will have to try to visit.
Our area is under flash flood warnings all over also. We have had so much rain this year. Don't know how much more this area can take. Sure am glad I live on a hill. It's raining yet again. Tomorrow will probably be dry with more rain on Sunday.
Stay safe is right, Janie. Looks awful in your area, too.

And not just in "your grandparents' backyard", but elsewhere as well, notably the Waldorf Astoria New York.
Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) & Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper): Omigosh, you folks better start loading those arks! … or at least y'all stay safe!

Bob & I and the horses will be ok. About 70% of our place will be under water, but not the house or barn areas, as they are on higher ground. Thank you for your kind thoughts. You can follow this flooding on KCRG.com This will be our areas 2nd record hitting flood, the first record setter was just back in 2008. Uncle Chuck, my work place is here at home. :)

Be safe, Deb & JT! It sounds like you have things under control.

Sure hope the experts are wrong and the levels aren't that high. The preparations are very impressive ~ good to see people are doing everything they can do to reduce the impact of the floods.
Nice pics Doug. The small point you passed after Sandy Beach and the point just to your west had piers that went out about 1000' into the lake to allow for onloading the blocks. The beach you landed on is known to us as Rocky Beach. There are many other quarries in the area; most of which have been taken over by nature.
Hard to believe that Jacobsville once had a population over 1000 and White City (where you launched) was a resort.

Appreciate your kind words, Dwight. With all the photos and material I've found, am always hungry for more. The piers you mention are news - make perfect sense. Tried seeing as many quarries as I could but it's getting tough with the vegetation. I think another run at them is in order.
