Jodi Corrigan spent some time in the Huron Mountains camping and while there, did some exploring. Over near L'Anse, is the little town of Pequaming, where back in the 1930's, Henry Ford had a sawmill. The information boards give some info about this "company town" as it was called, along with a photo of the mill when it was in operation back then. Interesting, indeed and something that I had not been aware of before.

The bottom photo, Jodi snapped in Big Bay and it's another "something" that I had no idea was there. This is the Henry Ford Sawmill Auto Plant, where wood body parts for the Model T's were made. So, I guess the U.P. had a hand in making Michigan the car capital of the world. Who'd have thought?

Nat and I just visited the Ford sawmill in Big Bay last month (before our journey across the Northwestern Road). It's amazing to me that it still stands after all this time as I remember camping on Lake Independence in the 80s and seeing the stack from almost anywhere on the Lake.

Great pics, Jodi!!

These stories of the old towns is always so interesting. We've been to Pequaming but i don't remember this much of the plant still being there. Obviously missed a few things back then. Thanks so much for the tour.

Fascinating pictures! Henry Ford's history is
always interesting to learn. Thank you Jodi for
sharing your adventure with us! This morning Bob
on his H.D. Dyna Low Rider and my twin brothers on
their Goldwings left for their annual Lake
Superior/ U.P motorcycle vacation. Today's first
stop was to the Harley Davidson Museum in
Milwaukee then they will be en-route for Sault Ste
Marie. Looking forward to those photos!

Very interesting pictures. I knew nothing about
any of this, so it's always interesting to read
something new about the UP. Some day maybe we'll
get over there to see it all. Thanks for sharing
your adventure with us.

Did you get to see the cemetery tucked back in
Pequaming too? That's such a neat little place to
check out!!!

Interesting. I knew Henry Ford had property in the U.P.

I think Pequaming was one of Henry Ford's pride
and joys, especially the mansion. Will always
remember how we rode our bikes there in the 1950s
when there were only one or two families still in
Pequaming, the rest of the houses and buildings
were abandoned in various conditons. We had the
whole place to ourselves and explored just about
everything. IF we had only had a camera then but I
treasure those wondeful old memories!!
