George Gipp was born in Laurium and went on to become a famous Notre Dame Football athlete. This park on Lake Linden Avenue in Laurium is dedicated to him and his memory. Recently, Michelle Nelson spent some time checking out the local historical sites around the Keweenaw and made a stop here to snap some photos.

You can tell by the care of this park, that "The Gipper" is a beloved native son that the Village of Laurium is proud of and wants to keep his memory alive so that future generations will know who he is and what he did. It's an inspiring story for any young athlete living in the Keweenaw to hear about, so they know that even small town kids can make it big if they work hard.

Just last week I had an email exchange with a gentleman who was concerned with a previous Pasty Cam that featured info about "The Gipper", along with a picture of Ronald Reagan, who portrayed George Gipp in the movie (see Pasty Central Day in History August 22). This gentleman felt that because of the movie, many of our young people associate Mr. Reagan as "The Gipper", rather than the real legend, himself. A few days later I saw these photos from Michelle and figured it was the perfect opportunity to get in a segment on who the real Gipper is. This is gorgeous! I knew there was a memorial to the Gipper there but never realized it was this nice and elaborate. It does the folks of Laurium proud!!

Our Grandmother, Mildred Anderson MacDonald, was the oldest sister of Hunk Anderson. And, my brother, Chuck won the Gipp Award in 1967. It's wonderful to see that the Gipp Award has been awarded to Female athletes since 1976.
