On a road trip recently, Taana Kallianen stopped along US-2, near Manistique, to visit Palm Books State Park where the Big Spring - Kitch-iti-kipi is. If you've never been there, you should make a point of putting it on your places to see.

It is Michigan's largest Spring, at 200 feet across and 40 feet deep. The water is crystal clear and is continually gushing out of fissures in the underlying limestone at 10,000 gallons a minute. And it doesn't matter if it's spring, summer, winter or fall, it never stops gushing. The temperature of the water stays at a constant 45° year round, too.

When you get there, you can hop aboard the raft and propel yourself across the Spring, as it is self operated, no motors, just people power. The water is so clear that you can see the trout 40 feet below you in the water, along with tree trunks and branches that have fallen into the spring's waters.

Directions to get there: On US-2, six miles northwest of Manistique, then go 12 miles north on M-149. It's a little out of the way, but well worth the side trip to see it in person.

Big Spring was an annual trip for our family, when I was a kid...one of my favorite stops. You can also see the sand gushing up at the bottom of the spring, 40 feet below...it's that clear.

I like the 4th photo that’s titled “Floating raft.” That’s a good thing, because nobody would want on be on it if it wasn’t floating.

If all the politicians were as transparent as that water it would be a far better nation we live in.
Great pictures, I enjoy visiting that place, I find it fascinating.

In the review is a picture of the Northern Lights. Saw a report that there was a spectacular display of the Northern Lights a few days back. Did anyone catch the show?
