On the southern coastline of the Upper Peninsula, you'll find two of the other Great Lakes that the U.P. borders, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Cindy Conway and Michael Donnelly visited several lighthouses on these Great Lakes and sent in some photos to share today.

We start in Manistique with the Lighthouse there on Lake Michigan. In their first shot, you can see the light out at the end of the breakwall that juts out into the lake. Then the next photo gives us an up close look at the Manisitique Lighthouse. Painted bright red, this beacon welcomes sailors into the harbor town. The light is not open to the public, but if the weather permits, you can walk out to it like Cindy and Michael did, to snap a few photos.

The Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, also on Lake Michigan was the next stop. Located in the town of Gulliver, this light guides boaters along the south shore of the U.P. This light is open to the public and is reported to have some strange happenings in and around it, making folks believe it is haunted by a former lighthouse keeper who is still at work in the structure.

The last stop for Cindy and Michael on this mini lighthouse tour, was in St. Ignace on the shores of Lake Huron. The Wawatam Lighthouse is a relatively new light for the Upper Peninsula, having been first lit in its St. Ignace location in 2006. Originally it was located in the Lower Peninsula at the Michigan Welcome Center at Monroe. It was put up for relocation in 2004 and then found its new home in the U.P. after that. The structure was trucked UP North in pieces and reassembled near the Chief Wawatam Dock. The beacon from this light can be seen out into Lake Huron for more than 13 miles.

If you'd like more information about any of these lights, you can click on the name of the lighthouse in each paragraph about them and those links will take you to a webpage with more info for your inquiring minds!

Relocating a lighthouse sounds like quite the undertaking.

It seems like they could have taken the Monroe lighthouse to the closest port and shipped it to St.Ignace. Then offload it right in place!

Thanks for sharing these great shots of lighthouses; Seul Choix Point is one of our favorites. Off the beaten path and a unique design.
