When the temperatures soar into the upper 80's here in the Keweenaw, the only thing to do is head north to a Lake Superior beach, like Judy Byykkonen and her family in Eagle River. In the first photo it's hard to tell where the Big Lake ends and the sky begins, making a great optical illusion.

It looks like a number of other folks had the same idea as Judy and her gang hanging out on the shores of Superior and going for a dip to cool off. Many times you don't even have to go into the water to beat the heat, since usually it's cooler along Lake Superior's shoreline than in town temperatures.

And then nothing beats a sunset with the reflection on the water's surface. Top it off with an evening swim and you've had just about as close to perfect a day as you can get.

I swam in Batchawana Bay in Canada, but not the main part of Lake Superior. Didn't know if it was warm enough to do so.

Thomas, it depends on if there is a shallow sand flat under the water. Also, down at our place on Lake Huron, what direction the surface water is coming from affects the temperature. If it comes from the Straits of Mackinac it is usually warmer than of it is coming from the deep part of the lake. I've seen conditions turn from "nice" to "too cold" in a space of hours.

I swam. Not a lot of people were in the lake but
if you just make up your mind and go right in-you
will find Lake Superior to be the most refreshing
swim ever-clear,brisk and refreshing!

I love swimming in Lake Superior in the morning. It is good exercise and a refreshing way to start the day. It is a wee bit cool, but when I was growing up I used to swim in the North Sea, so I guess I'm used to that.

I've always swum in Lake Superior. Lake Michigan
is warmer, but Lake Superior is cleaner. I would
stay in until I turned blue. Swimming out here in
Minnesota just isn't the same. Though, I've
finally found a nice beach in Duluth.
Unfortunately, we leave 3 hours from Duluth. So
it's not like you're going to take a drive to
Duluth in the hopes that the wind will be coming
off of the lake that day and the water will be
warm. That's what has to happen. If it's coming
off the lake, it churns up the bottom and the
water feels much warmer than it does if the wind
is blowing toward the lake. I've always found
that the opposite side of the Keweenaw is warmer
than the Eagle River side. Going to Big Traverse
always seems to be warmer, or even to Bete Grise.
I don't know the reason for that. At any rate,
there's nothing more refreshing that a swim in
Lake Superior. I'll go there before I'll go to
the ocean any day....."unsalted and shark free".

I've turned blue in the big lake too. Just not recently.
