Interesting photos here today snapped by Jodi Corrigan on an exploration adventure in the Ontonagon area. She told me that she is unaware of the name of this mine site, so from here on out, it will be the "mystery mine".
Quite a number of openings they explored, some she said were capped with concrete, others looked like they went straight down, while others you can see the light on the other end, just going to the other side of the rocky hill. At least that's what it looks like to me.
Check out the second to the last photo. Off to the far right in this photo you can see an area of white…that's ice still formed in the mine opening, even though the weather has been quite warm. Just shows you the coldness that comes up out of these mines. Back in the mining boom days here in the U.P., it must have been nice to go down into the mine for your workday when it was steaming hot on the outside. Maybe not, since it was a dangerous way to make a living and the wages back then weren't anything to write home about. Tough way to make a living for sure. Sites like this remind us of that historic time in the U.P.'s history.

A timely exploration here on the Pasty Cam, as our Day in History recalls a tragic incident surrounding one such abandoned mine in 1966 with Ruth Miller.

Another interesting subject and great pictures! Looks like the Porkies and Ontonagon got some strong weather and lots of rain a couple days ago. Even a tornado!

I'm not too much into exploring mines and such...too big a chicken to go underground. My hubby, though, would love it. Great pictures!!

Cool pic's! But.... I guess I'd have to choose caves over Gator's, Croc's, Shark's and Snakes, and a Frontal Lobotomy!! lol

Interesting photos today! I have an idea what the name of the mine is, but can't say for certain.
For those that are squeamish about going underground, you really need to check out Quincy Mine on top of the hill in Hancock. The mine is well lit, rather large inside, and a great tour all around. I'll likely be going there in a couple weeks again, just as I do everytime I'm there.

I can remember the "Ruth Ann Miller" incident as though it happened yesterday; what a tragic event. Back when I was a kid the old mining buildings, huge rock piles, shaft houses, etc. was our playground.

To me this looks like the Lake Mine near the intersection of M-26 and M-38.
