This week we've had a double dose of Shoebox Memories, as the parade started out with photos from Frederic J. Haun (via Paul Meier), and rounds to the finish with a home movie dug up by Dan Steck. Dan also happens to be the proud flag bearer in this memorable production.

It all happened in Eagle River, my home town, way up here on the Keweenaw Peninsula, a spot we've called home for almost 3 decades. Neat to see what was happening 6 decades ago.

Be careful if you're headed to the fireworks tonight. It gets crazy out there. Happy birthday to the U.S.A.!

Have a good week :o)

I especially like the top photo showing how modest girls were back then with their full one piece swim suits. Happy 4th of July, U.S.

What a great home movie!!! So glad you found it Dan!

Wouldn't it be great if someone on Pasty Cam could identify some of the ??? people?

"Folks riding on the fenders of the car! They're all going to die!"

And that little girl leaning on the windshield. "Oh horrors, call Children's Protective Services"!

Well golly gee, we all survived, without Big Brother butting in! Imagine that!

As Archie and Edith would say: (click →) "Those were the Days!".
(Ouch! My ears, my ears!)

As we speak, fireworks are going off all over Metro-Detroit...north, south, east and west. In a time of tyranny and insanity, we refuse to give in to terror...God Bless this land!

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Monday, July 4, 2016 - 11:35 pm:

I'm glad you all enjoyed my Grandfather's old slides. They weren't exactly stored in an old shoebox, just old slide trays, but the effect is the same. Thanks Dan for the great film! Things were definitely different back in the '50s, but then common sense was still used. One thing I have often wondered, with all the people in the parade, there could have been only a couple of people with cameras actually watching the parade. Eagle River wasn't that big even with the "Summer People".

Love the movie. I remember my mom taking movies of us and telling us to move around or do something. So we ran around in circles, my mom was not amused, but, we were kids.

Such a treat! Glad to see how Eagle River celebrated back then.
We watched the parade in Ishpeming yesterday. It was everything it
should have been, with all of us celebrating this country we love!
