This past Sunday, as Paul Nelson was out and about in Marquette, he noticed a cloud bank that was moving in over Lake Superior and headed toward Presque Isle. He said he only had his cell phone with him, but was able to capture the cloud formation changing shape as it moved across the Lake.
Quite the dramatic weather that happens over Lake Superior and look at the way the cloud formation comes right down from the sky and touches the Lake, almost like a fog forming on the water. I'm not sure if this cloud mass turned into a storm or if it just blew itself out, but what a perfect spot Paul was in to capture the magic and power of the skies and Lake Superior working together like that.

Very dramatic pix! I'd like to see these on The Weather Channel.

Unbelievable! Thank you so much for sharing,Paul! I've lived around the upper Great Lakes all my life, and have lived on Lake Michigan for 22 years. I'm a keen observer of weather phenomena, but I have never seen anything like what you captured here. Looks like a shelf cloud that had some kind of localized cold downdraft. I'm with Alex; these images deserve some broader attention, and I'd love to hear an expert analysis of it. (But thanks for sharing with the Pasty community first!)

Looks like a nasty downdraft.....wouldn't want to be out there in a boat during that! Awesome pics, Paul!

Those are some pretty cloudy clouds. Those are not 'Let's go to the beach' clouds. Great pictures.

Ikerumba! Holy Wah! anything else I can think of! I'd have to disagree with Duane on this one. I'd be right there watching as long as I could. This is where could and should become a grey area (forgive the pun). That's my dream shot right there. Oh and for the record, I know most would disagree with me but THAT is a day (to be) at the beach!

Great instincts Paul! And perfect timing! You got great shots with the phone and you know the old saying......... 'any ol' port in a storm!'
Thanks for sharing these with us ~ have never seen anything even close to this.

WOW! I think I've seen that before in a Sci-Fi movie. Real life imitating beautiful art.

Truly amazing shots, and with a cell phone! I have never seen anything like that either, and I've sat out there in all kinds of weather, but we had all the proper gear and libations back then..... so maybe we did see something similar??? lol
The storm clouds are the best depiction of how powerful the big lake can be. I have seen storm clouds before on the lake but nothing like these. Great photos.
