The birds are back and in technicolor besides. Jean Dessellier snapped today's visitors near her Lake Linden home and what a colorful group she captured.
The first two shots are of a male American Goldfinch, which is sporting his yellow plumage for the summer months. Such a striking bird with that bright hue and Jean captured it in a classic pose at her bird feeder.
Then Jean spotted a Red-winged Blackbird in the yard and snapped a photo of it while it was searching for bugs and such in the grass. From what I've read, these birds eat mostly insects in the summer months, so they're a good bird to have around once the bugs start hatching out. I sure hope they eat mosquitoes.
That's a Purple Finch in the last photo and Jean zoomed in so close that you feel like you're sitting on the branch right next to it. I've never quite understood the name for this beautiful songbird since the male is more of a reddish-pink and the female has no color, just brown and white. So where did the purple come from? Inquirig minds want to know...

Excellent shots! And appreciate you educating folks to call them goldfinches and not canaries!

Beautiful pictures!! We are so enjoying the birds out here in MN, too. They're just one of the many things I miss when the weather turns cold. I could just sit outside and listen to them all day.

The American Goldfinch is the real Iowa State bird....not the Hawkeye.

Pretty birds! I've learned so much from being on the Facebook pages, Michigan Bird Watching and Birding Michigan. You can put pictures on as often as you want, just to show what you've seen or to ask for an ID. Pictures on there range from blurry to professional looking. Sometimes you just have to snap quickly and get that blurry picture. These above are beautiful!

Since today seems to be about birds....there are 2 (two) new baby falcons in the nest-box on the liftbridge. One was hatched, if you will, I would say yesterday and one just made his grand entrance about 7 pm tonight. The third egg is cracked......Little tiny cotton balls and mom just fed them.

I had yellow ones land on my flower pots....they were cute to watch. Now all I get is squirrels digging up my flower pots to bury nuts. LOL....LOL....
