Bob Gilreath and his wife Liz were at it again, off exploring the area. This time they were above Lake Linden checking out what Bob said is the ghost town of Incline and the Sandstone Quarry.

There are several old stone bridges around the grounds and Bob points out in the fifth photo, a row of Lombardi Poplars used to define the edge of the old incline school yard, but are just about gone now. Then in the last two photos, you can see indents in the ground where cellar holes used to be, along the old apple orchard. Bob said when he first came to Hubbell in the 80's, there were quite a few of the apple trees left, but most are gone now.

Bob also did a little research on the History of Upper Peninsula of Michigan - Houghton County page and found the following interesting biography, so I'll leave you with this bit of history to accompany Bob's photos. Click on the previous link to read much more about the area on the MIGenWeb page:

Quote:

ARCHIBALD McNAUGHTON, superintendent of incline on the railroad of the Calumet &Hecla Mining Company. This incline is a section of the road adjacent to the mills, and nearly a mile in length, of a very steep grade, over which the cars are passed by means of a wire cable, which is operated by a steam engine at the need of the incline. Mr. McNaughton was placed in charge of this section of the road on its completion in 1868, and has held the same position ever since; his residence is at the top of incline; he was born in Scotland in 1829; came to America in 1854, and made his home in Ontario, Canada, for ten years, five of which he was engaged at the Bruce Mine, on the north shore of the Georgian Bay; he came to Lake Superior in 1864, and worked with the Quincy Mining Company for two years; in the spring of 1868, he was assigned his present position, and holds the same to this date, a period of fourteen years; he was married in Scotland in 1852, to Miss Catherine McIntyre; their family consists of three sons and four daughters.

For every incline there is an equal and opposite decline.

Good examples of nature's reclaiming.

Hmmmm that is one area I do not believe I have
checked out in my woods walking travels. Very
interesting pics!

Nature always comes back and continues and will
again long after the human experience. It makes
one question the entire 'save the planet' theme.

Way back in 1947, Aldo Leopold gave us some things to think about: "The conservation movement is, at the very least, an assertion that these interactions between man and land are too important to be left to chance, even that sacred variety of chance known as 'Economic Law'."

I'm inclined to believe this.
