We covered the icebreaking on the Portage Canal last Monday and then towards the end of the week,Chad Johnson snapped these photos of the broken apart ice floes that had blown near the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, making the water a maze of ice.
I love the blue color in the water in Chad's first shot. The white of the ice makes it look an even deeper hue. What a great puzzle this photo or any of the others would make and perhaps they'd even cool you off if you were building them on a warm day.
We've been blessed with some summer temperatures (right around 80° on Sunday) over the weekend, so I'm guessing that the majority of the remaining snow on Mont Ripley has since melted and most likely much of this floating ice is gone, also. Before you know it, those docks at the Houghton County Marina will be occupied by boats of all sizes and traffic will be once again busy on the Canal.

Nice shots, Chad. Checking out the Bridge Cam over the last couple weeks, it looked like the ice had vanished long ago. Was surprised to see these ice floes in today's pics.

I sure hope Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat are OK today. Did they ever finish building that ark?
(P.S.: Those "ice pancakes" are bigger than a pannukakku from the ol' Suomi Restaurant!)

Spring takes longer to reach the Keweenaw, but it's getting there according to these nice pictures.

FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash): "… Did they ever finish building that ark?"
Come to think of it, since Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat are both geologists, I hope their ark isn't something like (click →) this one!
