Danielle Adams was on hand Easter Sunday, to photograph the first boat arriving in Marquette for the startup of the shipping season on Lake Superior. That's the American Steamship Company's Buffalo, pulled up to the dock and ready to take on a load of ore for transport.

It looks like the harbor is mostly clear of ice, unlike other years when Lake Superior had more ice cover and it stayed around longer, slowing down the ore carriers. Danielle's bottom two photos are of the USCG Neah Bay that was in Marquette a few days before the Buffalo arrived. They were docked by Mattson Park after working in the Upper Harbor breaking up the ice in preparation for the shipping season opening.

Danielle also said that the Soo Locks officially opened back up at midnight this past Friday and the first boat through was the Roger Blough. Here's hoping that the shipping season will be a safe and productive one for all the boats out there on the Big Lake.
