When heading up to Copper Harbor to check on his cottage, Joe Kirkish always makes a stop at his favorite place along Lake Superior's shoreline, Great Sand Bay. On this beautiful sunny day this past weekend, he found that the ice had gone out, transforming the shoreline from its winter look to spring, but still a few remnants of the white stuff around. Here's what Joe observed while there:
"I took a Palm Sunday trip along my favorite route to my favorite Great Sand Bay, just to see how this strange on-again, off-again weather has affected it. Took a lot of shots, but these represent the feelings I had as I walked around on the beach, not too long ago covered with ice & snow.
First, a typical view with dead grass in the foreground, then that beautiful, placid lake & snow-lined beach.
Then the residue of foot and paw prints gradually fading away along the now badly eroded beach ledge.
The colors were magnificent on the water & the beach, with pebbles left behind by winter storms.
But the erosion! Really serious, the worst I’ve seen in years.
The river flows beautifully with warm weather melting the snow above it.
And the river also spreads a chocolate-colored mud along its sides.
The shoreline seems to have some sort of drawn pattern along it, etched by receding water.
More signs of life here on the beach other than mine - tiny, medium & large prints in the snow that remain along the beach, gradually vanishing in the sun.
And still more signs of a violent winter’s waves that reached - what, about 100 feet from the shore.
But yet, in places, spring still seems a long way off. - Joe"
Special thanks to Joe for always making my job as daily editor so easy with his observant eye and descriptive words. He really knows how to make the photographs come to life!
