Over the weekend, the Michigan Tech Hockey Huskies came out on top for a sweep of the WCHA Quarterfinal series, which now puts them playing again on Friday in the WCHA Final Five. Way to go Huskies!!

Bob Gilreath was on hand with his trusty sidekick camera during the games and snapped a couple interesting shots starting with what he says is the Alaska goalie attempting snow angels on the ice to keep the puck out of the net. It does kind of look like that might be what he's doing!

But the really neat photos are the next three…it's a quick succession of photos that Bob snapped when Michigan Tech's Jake Lucchini "snipes" the goalie's water bottle on top of the net. In the first of these three photos, it's kind of hard to see, but the puck is just under the bottle, hitting it from below the net and breaking it open. The next shot, you can see the water flying out of the bottle, the orange cover flying up, just under the P in Aspirus on the boards and the puck about midway in the net as it's coming back out. The third shot the orange cover is in the middle of the U in Aspirus, the puck is back out in the crease and the water bottle is settled toward the back of the net. That's some pretty fancy goal shooting and even fancier camera work, capturing it!

The bottom photo was after the last game in the Quarterfinal series on Saturday. Lots of smiles on those young men's faces! Congratulations Tech Hockey and good luck on Friday!

I don't have any photos, but another Hockey team from the Copper Country brought home some hardware this weekend, the Hancock Bulldogs won the State Championship, beating Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The team was welcomed home in typical Copper Country fashion with police, fire trucks and oodles of cars joining them as they went through local towns. We're all proud of the Bulldogs...Way to go!!

One more team I'd like to mention... the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes. They won their District Championship on Friday, beating the Chassell Panthers in an exciting playoff game. Last night they played the #1 team in the State of Michigan, North Central and put up a good fight, but in the end, North Central came out on top. We're proud of our Lakes for the great season they had and for taking us along on a whirlwind ride. Thanks and way to go Lakes!!
