Digital cameras were rare back then. We had been capturing frames from a video camera, to bring scattered scenes from the U.P. on this new World-Wide-Web, with our earliest shots in 1995. But as time passed, our purchase of a digital camera (a Sony Mavica) during the 1997-98 Winter Carnival suddenly made my son Jonathan in-demand for anyone who wanted to grab a quick image to show on "the 'net". As the photo of a friend's new grandson was taken back on that February day in 1998, Jonathan and I somehow stumbled on the idea for making it a regular commitment, to bring "A Daily Glimpse of Life in the U.P". 18 years later, we're still doing it ...and that grandson is old enough to register for Selective Service. (Way to go, Alex!) Thanks to his Mom Christine Voelker for the photo.
Though Sunday's Pasty Cam was ready late in the day, most visitors won't see it until Monday morning, due to some complications for your humble reporter. Edie and I are both in the hospital in Marquette. I'm staying in one of the Hospitality Rooms, and she is upstairs preparing for a brief surgery Monday morning, in her ongoing challenges as a Type 1 diabetic. Thanks for so many in the Pasty Cam family who have expressed your support and prayers for Edie. When we started the website in 1996, our motto was "Supporting care for the elderly in the U.P.". Given enough time, that's where we all arrive :o)
My prayers today are with Edie. May the surgery be successful and her recovery quick.
