Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, February 19, 2016 - 07:21 am:

We started the week on the north shore of Lake Superior at Bucky's (Calumet Waterworks) Park, checking out the ice cover there. The shoreline was filled with ice, but did not extend out too far, as you could see the water beyond it.

Then yesterday we stopped further south along the same shoreline, at the Upper Entry to the Keweenaw Waterway, near McLain Park. There was ice all along the shore there, also, but nothing solid, mostly what is called pancake ice and is really many ice floes all pushed together. Again here the ice didn't extend out very far and you could see the water beyond it.

Now today, Kathleen Niemi Vettori takes us to her camp out at Misery Bay, which is further south than either of our stops earlier this week. You can't even see Lake Superior here, it's like she's swallowed up by ice. I find it interesting that the ice cover is at different degrees in different locations along the same shoreline. All three of these visits were within a few days of each other, so here again we get to see how changing the Big Lake really is. She sure is an amazing body of water... and ice this time of year.

Never got to post how much i enjoyed yesterday pictures and now these are beautiful too! Shows how different it can be from one location to another!

Nice pictures of Mother Superior wearing her cloak of winter white. Mother Nature is on her inexorable march to March that will find Mother Superior's cloak changing to gray and eventually blue. I think she looks much better when she is wearing blue.

Beautiful photos! Thanks Mary and Kathleen!

You can view NOAA's Great Lakes Surface
Environmental Analysis daily map that shows
surface water temperatures all year and an ice
cover analysis during the winter months:

Google "Great Lakes Surface Environmental
Analysis", and you'll find a page with the same
title. On that page, choose "Color Countour
(Latest)" at the top of the page.

Superior winter pictures! We are flirting with 60
degrees today and tomorrow here in Eastern Iowa.

More Winter beauty.

Hard to believe these pix when it's 57 degrees right now.
J.T.: Hmmm, I wonder what Bob will be doing this weekend. ;-)

an odd day in the great lakes region today.
my outdoor thermometer reached 64 degrees in
grand rapids with a whirlwind going through
the area -- very windy. it is strange,
in the middle of february, to see no snow in
the neighborhood and the lawns actually showing
an abundance of green.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, February 19, 2016 - 06:28 pm:

Alex, he won't be riding, it is such a muddy mess
everywhere, unless he puts the ATV tires on the
Low Rider...lol!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, February 19, 2016 - 07:42 pm:

Oh come on, JT...this is something he can tell his grandkids about: "I rode in February, in the middle of the winter of 2016, uphill...both ways, just so you could enjoy take-out." :-)

Oh our grand kids will have plenty of entertaining
stories to amuse them. When I had my 1977 XLCH and
a healthy backbone, Bob & I would ride with a
group every New Years Day.

Beautiful pictures. The ice doesn't go out quite
that far in Eagle River, but still quite a
distance. It's amazing how that lake freezes like
that. We were going to go to the Waterworks but
decided on Eagle River instead. We were glad we
did that because we got to see all of the deer,
too.

Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful indeed when the skies are blue, but I can remember pining away for that ice to be gone and see blue water, and warm temps. Too long!!
