Yesterday, we featured a night scene of the Mackinac Bridge from a Michigan Tech alumni, Marty Schendel, who had snapped it on his way back downstate from the Winter Carnival festivities. He also sent today's photos showing a side of the Winter Carnival we don't normally get to cover and that's the long standing traditions that many of the MTU fraternities participate in. Along with the photos, Marty added these words:
"I was up to see Joe Kirkish (that's him in the third photo, on the right), see the Winter Carnival activities and visit with my fraternity brothers and of course indulge in photography, in the most beautiful diverse place on earth (my opinion). The Phi Kappa Tau fraternity has many traditions revolving around WC including working hard to create breathtaking snow statues and engaging in all aspects of the festivities. Other traditions include taking part in the alumni/active hockey game, hosting a wine and cheese social at the fraternity house to which members of the city government and neighbors are invited and participating in competitions like the tug-of-war and various other winter races."
Marty's photos give us a different glimpse into the fun side of Winter Carnival, not just the hard work the students put into building the outstanding ice statues each year.
His last photo is just one more landmark around the Houghton/Hancock area, the Ranger III sitting at her dock on the Portage Canal for the winter, awaiting springtime and her first voyage to Isle Royale for the 2016 season.
