When Beth Jukuri is looking for some peace and quiet in the wintry months, she heads out for a snowshoe walk in the woods. For her and many of us, the tranquility when out there with the ground covered in snow is mesmerizing and has a calming effect on one's being. Beth said it best when she posted these photos, that, Instead of "finding" peace, we become ONE with Peace when we insert ourselves in nature. She added the she had seen such fabulous sights and the stillness... the only sound was her breath. So, not only is a walk on snowshoes good exercise, but it's good for the mind and soul, too.

Beth's photos, taken near her Chassell home, again illustrate the difference a day makes in the weather here UP North. Her first three shots were taken this past Saturday, while the remaining photos were snapped the next day, on Sunday. The landscape, although already snow-covered looks more like a winter wonderland on the second day of her hike, with the snow blanketing everything in sight, including the tree branches. That is what makes the woods so quiet in the wintertime... the snow acts like insulation, cushioning the sounds around you. It truly doesn't get much better than this.

Great pix and commentary!

Hi
It's nice to see pictures of snow, and these are beautiful. The first, windy, picture made me think "Head for those pine woods to get some protection".

We haven't had snow downstate, but my mom and I did take in the beauty of the Christmas full moon.

Breathtaking!

I certainly agree with the peace, silence and serenity attributes of a walk in the park, er… snow, — so quiet you could hear the snow falling(!) — but unfortunately I was introduced to snowshoes a bit early, in my early teens some 60+ years ago on my grandparents' farm in Bruce Crossing, struggling thru the snow with some then very old "bear paw" snowshoes. It was like strapping a large pizza pan on each foot. Sadly, that pretty well permanently turned me off to the "joys of snowshoing"! I wish I could have enjoyed the experience. (Oh sisu, where were you then?)

In more recent years I have heard and seen some first-time visitors to the Grand Canyon hobbling around bow legged, aching and complaining after a several hour's mule ride down into the canyon. Although I've never done that, after those early snowshoe experiences I know their pain, oh yes indeedy!

I certainly hope that snowshoe technology has come a very long way in the last 60+ years! 😉

Great pictures Beth, you truly have a knack for capturing the many faces of Mother Nature.

I love all of the pictures, but the first 3 look
so cold and the last 3 don't, lol. Don't know
why. Maybe it's the fluffyness of the snow. But
I'm totally drawn to them. Beautiful!

Amazing winter photos only the U.P. can do.

I grew up with snow. I miss snow!
Thank you for the nice photographs.

Beautiful Winter scenery. Someone should put Christmas lights on that Christmas tree and take a night photo with the lights all lit up.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 - 09:25 pm:

Dr. Nat,

How HAVE you been doing with all the weather challenges down that way?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 - 10:15 pm:

Deb,

I wonder if the 1st 3 look cold because the overall color is more grey, while the last 3 have a more overall blue shade?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 - 10:56 pm:

Could be, jbuck! Usually out here, when the snow
is fluffy, the way it looks in the last 3, the
temperatures are a little higher. The top 3 look
icy, if you know what I mean.
