When Carolyn Williams decided to make a run to Marquette this past Saturday, she soon discovered an added bonus to the trip. Because of the winter storm and winds, there were several freighters waiting out the weather before getting back out in the shipping lanes on Lake Superior.
In her first photo, taken off Presque Isle in Marquette, we see the Cason J. Callaway as it passes the break wall light. The snow in the air gives the photo an eerie look, almost like it is in a fog.
The next three shots were taken in Keweenaw Bay, with the Algosoo and the Tim S. Dool anchored out there. Carolyn said how she loves being able to see these freighters 'semi-close up' and that she wished she had had her Canon with her that day, but actually her cell phone didn't do too bad a job. In order to snap the 2nd and 3rd photos, she even waded through the snow. Now that's dedication, the kind you find in a true boat nerd! These shots also have the feel of eeriness, making it seem almost like a ghost ship out there on the Big Lake, especially the last one with a fog-like haze between the water and the hull of the boat.

Great shots there, Carolyn! It's truly amazing what cell-phone cameras can do these days, but I still prefer my trusty Nikon SLRs....

I take most of my pictures with my phone. It works wonderfully.

I'm with you Capt!! My Nikon F's and the Nikkor lens are hard to beat
Always glad when the freighters can find refuge during the storms and keep their crews safe. God keep them safe!

Love the clean white snow in these pictures! So much prettier than our gray, gloomy, muddy landscapes....I also use my cell phone camera.
