Over in Three Lakes, Frederic W. Koski captured what the early morning Hoar Frost looks like this time of year. From afar, it just looks like everything is coated in white frost, but when you get in close, you can really see the job Jack Frost does on everything in sight.

From the leaves that are still hanging on to the branches, to the weeds much closer to the ground, it is all coated with a spiky looking white, resembling the thorns on a rose stem. My favorite two shots here today are the first and the last one. Both of them because they really show the prickliness of this Hoar frost as it sits on the landscape. Even though it looks all thorny and picky, you know if you touch it or grab onto the fences you won't feel the stab of something sharp. No, the most it will do is make your fingers cold as the frost melts quickly from the warmth of your skin. The beauty and wonder of Mother Nature at work is amazing indeed!

Great photos, thanks for sharing! And it's also great to have the MTU campus cam joining pasty.com.

These are outstanding shots, Frederic! Great detail and sharpness. Thanks for sharing these, Mary!

Interesting...at first I thought the first pic was a bat.

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, December 14, 2015 - 10:03 am:

phenomenal!

Jack Frost's artwork is unique. All the rains we
have had are dwindling, but not without leaving us
with a flooded field.

Great pictures of Mother Nature's creations. The first two look like 'barbed wire' frost trying to keep the sun away from the leaves. As always it is a futile effort.

The photos are so clear and beautiful!

These are so beautiful. Would love to see this forming with a slow motion camera.
Thanks for sharing the beauty. Frederic and Mary.

Mother Nature is quite an artist, for sure! Yesterday, we hit 68 degrees in southeast Michigan. Today is not far behind. It just doesn't seem right so close to Christmas!

Beautiful!

I don't see a bat in that first pic, Alex, I see a turkey. Notice his white beady eye at the back of his beak. Looks to be roosting in the tree.

Thanks for the comments and Mary for posting, the time lapse is a great idea.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 14, 2015 - 07:18 pm:

"Time lapse", those are the words I couldn't remember this morning, Frederic, thanks!

Omigosh, Alex, that's hideous!! Looks like that bat flew into the back of a stalled Mack truck!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 - 08:16 am:

Beautiful and very "cool" pictures!!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 - 11:54 am:

Nice shots!
Alex, that bat is the Definition of "UGLY" !!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 - 08:08 pm:

I'm having second thoughts about the bat pix...I've seen them twice in my rear-view mirror and now I'm gonna have bat guano nightmares. Is bat guano dangerous?
