When Bob Gilreath posted today's photos, he added this about them: "Got Blue Jays, wanna have some fun, throw some peanuts on the ground and see how fast they make them disappear."

Bob has some amazingly clear close-ups here of the Blue Jays visiting his Hubbell backyard bird feeding station, picking up peanuts in the shell and carrying them off. I didn't get to ask him, but I'm wondering if he saw any of them break the shell open to get the nut inside? I would have never thought they would be interested in a whole peanut like that, but it makes sense, since they're similar to the sunflower seeds you put out, as the birds have to open them to get the "seed" out to eat, too. I'm guessing it was quite comical to watch these birds grabbing them in their beaks and flying off with them. Cheap Copper Country entertainment…you've got to love that!

Mary, they can get through that shell in no time. They take it to a hard surface and peck it open. Their beaks are made for that.
Love Blue Jays! I think you could almost tame them with peanuts in the shell.
They also bury them for future meals.

I think they are a pretty bird but they certainly aren't very melodious. Their cousin the Gray Jay (or Lumberjack) is the one that is real easy to tame. They have no fear of humans and get to be downright pests.

Blue Jays can be a bit nasty to the other birds, but
they sure are beautiful. Wonderful photos.

Ok the pics are cool...BUT...Blue Jays are on my crap list...next to chipmunks...all they do is bully other birds and make a lot of noise...plus they eat all the food....they do make good targets though

Beauty is only skin deep.

I also love Blue Jays. I don't like how they
treat the other birds, but it's like that with
every species, including humans. They are
absolutely beautiful!

Are those beer nuts?

Count me among those who love Blue Jays, even though they're noisy, they are beautiful birds! BTW, they also like dry cat food.;>

I'm late to the party on this subject but...here on the west coast we don't have this traditional Blue Jay (at least, not in my neighborhood) but we do have a bird called the Stellar's Jay. It's a striking bird. Has the blue body with a black head. Looks like two different birds from body to head. I looked up a few images with hopes of posting a pic here but then realized, I can't do that. Sigh. Anyway, if you're curious, Google it and see what it looks like. It has much the same personality as your Jay. Very noisy, especially in the campgrounds where they move in to look for leftovers when campers leave their sites.
