Danielle Adams has been keeping an eye on the comings and goings at Marquette Harbor and reports in here today with some photos of the Herbert C. Jackson freighter as it was pulling in to the south Power Plant to unload the cargo of stone it was carrying.
It looks like Lake Superior was nice and calm that day, which isn't always the norm during these winter season shipping months. I can only imagine how cold it must be out there on the Big Lake when the temperatures are cold enough for snow to be falling and the winds are whipping Superior into a fury. The boats and sailors here on the Great Lakes will be taking a break in a little more than a month though, so the coldest and stormiest days of winter they'll be safe and sound on land.

Freighters are always a beautiful sight and the awesome cloud formation only adds to that beauty in these photos. Thanks, Danielle, and Mary.

I always enjoy seeing the freighters making their treks across the lake. Some of the stories they have are amazing as well. The history of the Great Lakes are the travellers on it are something else. Thanks for the pics!

The last picture is my favorite. These boats with their lights all on really are striking!

Watched that freighter, and a lot of others go past my house to and from Duluth many year both day and night. So nice to watch at night with their lights on. Nice shots!

I must add I knew the names of which ship was passing by with the Pasty Marine Traffic site. That's a cool site! Thanks Pasty! :)

Hi It's nice to see an old-style freighter with the pilot house in the bow. It's always a treat to see a lit-up freighter go by our cabin at Lake Huron.
In the second picture I see some ducks in the foreground. It's not detailed enough to make a positive ID, but with the black heads and white chests they might be mergansers.

I like the freighters that have the pilothouse at the bow.

I wonder what it is like to sail the big lakes on a freighter! Great pics!

Generally speaking and for the most part freighters with the pilot house in front sail on the Lakes and ones with the pilothouse in the rear sail in salt water and are known as salties.
