We've visited this lighthouse here on the Pasty Cam a number of times, in various seasons and even though it was a cold day when Laurie Bashaw was there recently, with the sun shining it makes for some outstanding scenes.

The snow, the sky, the clouds, the icicles, so many things combined together and surrounding Big Bay Lighthouse there, perched overlooking Lake Superior, it makes you forget the freezing temperatures. Well, maybe not quite, since the icicles hanging on that lone tree on the shoreline are a stark reminder that it's cold enough to freeze the Lake Superior waves as they drip off the branches.

We sure have been experiencing a much milder winter than usual in the Keweenaw so far. Across the U.P., we've had various amounts of snow on the ground, but then after it has fallen it seems we get a few days of warmer, sunny days and it all but melts away again. Seems that Mother Nature can't make up her mind.

Given the fact that it's raining and in the 40s here in OH it's great to see the snow (even if there isn't much), Lake Superior (even if it's not ice covered :-) ), and of course the lighthouse. The beauty of the UP never disappoints!

Mary says: Paul...it's actually raining here in the Keweenaw right now, also, so the snow that was on the ground is melting away. Temps are supposed to be dropping today, so that will most likely mean snow and icy conditions again here.

Speaking of a much milder winter, we may see one due to El Nino.

From that view this lighthouse looks a lot like Eagle Harbor. Beautiful photos, Laurie!

Nice pictures, I particularly like the pictures of the icicles on the tree. Icicles that are growing shorter are much prettier than those that are growing longer.

I thought it was the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse at first.
The photos are very lovely-especially the icicles !

It just occurs to me: There are two Big Bays in da UP. Bays, that is, not so for towns/villages of that name:

1. In Powell Township, Marquette County, northwest of the city of Marquette, where the Big Bay Point Lighthouse is.

2. In Grant Township, on da south side o' da Keewenaw, between Keystone Bay and Fish Cove.

Beautiful pictures! I have never photographed Big Bay Lighthouse from this angle before. At first glance, it reminded me of Eagle Harbor, too, but from the other side, not so much. It is another beautiful location in the upper peninsula. I will have to visit it again on my next trip.

Thanks everyone, for the kind words. We like to joke that Big Bay is at the end of the world, even more so than Copper Harbor. It's a fun place to visit, especially if you know anything about Anatomy of a Murder. You can go to the Lumberjack Tavern where the murder took place, and the Thunder Bay Inn where some of the movie scenes were filmed.
