Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 - 07:51 am:

When our most recent winter storm was brewing, Joy Ziemnick grabbed her camera and headed out to McLain State Park to get some photos of Lake Superior all riled UP in a frenzy. The Big Lake really does some rocking and rolling during the Gales of November, with plenty of splashing and crashing against the break wall there at the Upper Entry to the Portage Canal.

In Joy's photos you can see the fury and strength of those waves, with timbers thrown up onto the break wall and the spray blowing off the top of the waves. Joy commented that she thought those seagulls have SISU, to be out there trying to fly against the wind like that, as she was having trouble just keeping the camera steady against the gusts blowing around. She was bundled up warm, but said her fingers needed thawing out afterwards. If you're wondering where her hubby and Diesel, their four-legged companion were, Jim was out picking driftwood for Joy's projects and Diesel was comfy and cozy back in the car. He may have been the smartest one of the three that day. ;-)

To really get a feel for the wind and waves, Joy took a short video for us to enjoy. Click on it to hear the roar of Lake Superior!

I love watching Lake Superior in action.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

That video made me so homesick. My husband said,
"And we live way down here, why?" Well, because
we can't afford to quit our jobs, that's why.

Thanks for sharing these. They're awesome!!

Terrific shots!! My husband and I used to enjoy watching Lake Michigan's fury over the breakwall in Petoskey. Sorry that we never got UP that far to see the BIG Lake in action.

Great pic's and video! Deb, I can relate! :=))

By Duane P. (Islandman43) on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 - 08:43 am:

Thanks for sharing those great pictures Joy. Mother Superior was a bit grumpy on that day. It's an inland ocean in motion. The power of water is amazing to me.

Wow...excellent video and a first with sound, I believe. This opens up all kinds of possibilities, such as the sounds in the middle the a forest.

Happy Thanksgiving pasty-cam friends and thank you for your always kind remarks. Alex, I enjoy your dry sense of humor!

How awesome! I just LOVE the many moods of Lake
Superior. Awesome photos!

And this looks like it is between the two structures protecting the entryway to the canal. I bet it was even worse over on the Stanton Township Park side.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 - 01:33 pm:

Nice photos. I've always loved watching the lake in all its moods.

By the evidence of the drift wood's location, Joy must have just missed the largest of it. The weather service was predicting 27 foot waves during that storm.

Sisu, fer sure, Mary, but not so much "flying against the wind" as using it to stay aloft with virtually no furious wing flapping, i.e. soaring, as mentioned in this Wikipedia list of soaring birds.

Quote:

"… birds [including seagulls!] that can maintain flight without wing flapping, using rising air currents."

Those seagulls may even be getting some Ridge lift as the wind is lifted by that breakwall.

Me too Stephanie … from the comfort of my "Lazy Frank" recliner in Phoenix, AZ! 😉

I never seem to be able to correctly follow FRNash's posting instructions (or find the link to them).

Here's a link to the big wave map that day:

Maybe this will help, D.A.: PastyCam: formatting; It's a bit of a study, but it's all there!

Thank the Lord no ships went down in the recent gale on the lakes.

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 - 05:18 pm:

I hope everyone knows that is the action on the PROTECTED side of the break wall. Wonder what it is like on the outside.
Just a bit breezy Eh?
