The leaves are down, the snow has fallen and melted again for the time being (at least here in Lake Linden), so we get to take a walk in the woods with Melanie Hakala Rossi. And actually, now that rifle deer hunting season has begun, this is about the only walk in the woods that is safe right now.
Our first stop is the Tunnel of Love in Lake Linden. This was most likely built by C&H and passed under the C&H Traprock Valley railroad, for the Houghton Country Traction Company street cars to travel between Calumet and Lake Linden. What a picturesque ride that must have been back in the day.
The second photo is Snowmobile/ATV trail #3 above Lake Linden, which was washed out back in April, I think. This section of the trail has been closed all summer, but now the filling in and repairs have been completed, as you can see in the photo, just in time for snowmobile season to start the beginning of December.
The remaining shots are just some of the beauty Melanie found along the way. The green moss is so pretty and I bet soft and lush to the touch. The mushrooms are similar to the ones we featured this past Saturday, only these tree-huggers are much lighter in color and more like umbrellas than pancakes. The wonders one finds when walking in the Keweenaw woods are quite remarkable, indeed!

You would think these photos were taken in the summer, if it wasn't for the leaves on the ground. Nice Pix!

That first picture looks just like the tunnel on US 41 between Marquette and Negaunee. In the 50's when 41 was made 4 lane the tunnel was replaced with bridges to carry the LS&I over the road. They moved the road a bit to the south. If I remember right the tunnel is still there but it has been filled in. It's about 100 yards north of where the bridge crosses 41 now.

When I was a child, my older sisters and I used to walk in the woods on our grandparent's land in autumn, I loved the things we'd see and the smells one would only find in the woodsy areas. Thanks for sharing these scenes, Melanie and Mary.

Very nice pictures. I like the stump with the moss on top of it. The tunnel of love looks like a pretty short trip.

The "tunnel of Love" was a favorite hangout of kids when i was young. we climbed all over it.Not far from there..was the frog pond where we made rafts and poled our way around. Lots of fun memories from "up on the tracks". Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

Jaby..."up on the tracks"; I grew up in Detroit about a half a mile from the line that runs from downtown Detroit all the way to Chicago and we also had many-a-favorite hangout. I remember a place called "Snakes Valley" where we used to catch as many Garter snakes as we could and then we would let them lose on the floor at school the next day...I can still hear the screams. :-) Kids will be kids on the tracks.
