George Beveridge was out for a walk in the woods near his Bootjack home, enjoying the autumn leaves blanketing the ground, when he spotted this interesting fungi growing on a tree. He said he doesn't know what kind of mushrooms they are, but Mother Nature sure does a good job.

I have no idea what these pancake-like mushrooms are called either, but I'm betting there will be someone in our viewing audience that will be able to identify them for us.

It's been a great fall to be out there enjoying nature for sure. We've had temperatures in the mid 50's and into the high 60's for most of this week, compared to last year when we had so much snow there had already been a snow day off for the school kids. We'll take all the unseasonably warm days we can get, since the white stuff will be here to stay before you know it. In fact the forecast at the time these notes were written was for possible 1 to 5 inches of wet snow into Friday. So perhaps by now when you're reading this, fall has turned into winter. ;-)

Always something interesting in the woods!

And for those going out on Opening Day, be careful out there and good luck!

Have seen a lot of these but sorry, Mary, even with all these years under my belt I haven't a clue as to what they're called. I would suppose they are akin to toadstools though. Maybe Dr. Nat will know. BTW, Happy (belated) Birthday, Dr. Nat!:-)

Stairway to Heaven, or I just stumbled into IHop.

I don't think I'd want to swallow them, though.

They're a type of shelf fungus and that's as
much as I know. I, too, thought of pancakes
when I saw them, Mary.

A walk in the woods does a body and mind good!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, November 15, 2015 - 10:11 am:

Awesome, Alex. First thing I thought about was
IHop and Perkins, lolol!!! They look good enough
to eat :-)

Very rich color in those pics. Does anyone else see the deer in the first picture?:)
With apologies to Joyce Kilmer:

I did not think I'd ever see
Pancakes growing on a tree.
God's little critters I suppose
Are happy when they dine on those.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, November 15, 2015 - 12:19 pm:

Ha! I see the deer too!

Aren't these known as 'tree ears'?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, November 15, 2015 - 01:45 pm:

You mean the green deere?

By Duane P. (Islandman43) on Sunday, November 15, 2015 - 02:38 pm:

Shirley: That's the one:)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, November 15, 2015 - 02:43 pm:

That's what I figured, Duane, otherwise it would have to be an awfully short brown deer.;)
