Friday night in Ontonagon was the final game of the District playoffs for MHSAA Class D Volleyball. The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes played a tough series against the Ontonagon Gladiators, with the Lakes coming out on top to bring home the District Champion title and trophy. Congratulations lady Lakes!

The Lakes, who are coached by Maureen Schick, move on to the Regional playoffs tonight, playing the Stephenson Eagles at the Westwood High School in Ishpeming. The game starts at 6:00 p.m., so if you're able to make the trip or if you live in the Ishpeming area, come on out and cheer them on. GO LAKES!!

Another November 10 occurrence comes to mind this morning: the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald 40 years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with those families whose lives were touched that night.

Congrats to the Lady Lakes!

Will never forget that day in Marquette when, on my way to class, someone told me them couldn't find the Fitz. It seemed impossible that she and all hands were lost. God bless the families who remain and remember.

Congratulations ladies, that is certainly something you can be proud of. Good luck in the Regional tournament, and onward to the State tournament.

Remembering the terrible tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and also 'EddyFitz' (Ed Chaput) who sailed on her maiden voyage. May God comfort all their families today.

Congratulations, ladies.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - 10:30 am:

Ed Chaput was the first person I thought about this morning when the news was reporting the Edmund Fitzgerald story.

Can't believe it's been 40 YEARS since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Seems like yesterday. God bless those 29 crew members, and their families.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - 12:55 pm:

Thanks for posting that, Alex, he was fine fella. I always enjoyed his postings from the 'old Boatnerd' days. Still hard to believe he's no longer with us.

By Stewart Keskitalo (Skeskitalo) on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - 01:38 pm:

That was a stormy night that was felt as far south as Algonac Michigan. I remember leaving church and feeling the fierceness of the winds. Then later to hear Gordon Lightfoot's haunting song "The Gales of November". Mariner's Church, in Detroit, held a service commerating the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 29 brave crewmembers who died aboard her.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - 09:36 pm:

Lifting up the memory of all the mariners who lost their lives on the Great Lakes and elsewhere, and a prayer for their families.
