Unless you've been holed somewhere without a TV or Internet, you know that the skies held an uncommon occurrence of a Super Moon, also referred to as a Blood Moon and a Lunar Eclipse last week. There were photos all over the news and social media, so when I received several sets of photos for possible use on the Pasty Cam, I wasn't sure if we should feature them or not, until I spotted the first three shots from Susan Hooker. How could I resist featuring the rise of the Super Moon over the Portage Lake Lift Bridge?

Susan's first shot is my favorite, with the moon looking so huge as it starts its rise. Her next photo makes it look like the moon was taking a break, resting on the cables across the Lift Bridge spans and the last one is just a great view of the Bridge, with the moon overhead.

The last three photos were snapped by Henry Sakari of the Lunar Eclipse of the Super Moon, with the first photo being before the eclipse began. The second of Henry's shots shows the color that gives it the name, Blood Red Moon, as the eclipse was beginning. And of course the last photo is during the eclipse with just a sliver of the moon still visible.

This moon rising and eclipse was rare, because it was the closest to the Earth the moon gets, thus making it look larger and brighter to those of us viewing it from here on earth. Also having a Total Lunar Eclipse made it a special occurrence for viewing and we here in the Keweenaw were lucky enough to have ring side seats with no cloud cover to hide the event.

Thanks for the great moon shots!

We had too many clouds to see the eclipse; so glad others were able to enjoy it

I caught a slight glimpse, but nothing like these...thank you!

You guys (and gals) were lucky in the Keweenaw to see it with no clouds. Here, it was too cloudy and misty to see anything. I did manage to catch the last blood moon and got some great photos, but I'm sure the clear, clean skies of the north made it that much better....

Fabulous photos! What a spectacular event captured
so beautifully! Thanks, Susan and Henry!

Absolutely stunning!! We were watching the moon
come up that night and it was so beautiful even
before this all started. Then the clouds rolled
in and we got to see nothing. So thanks so much
for sharing these. I've seen other photos, but
none like these ones.

Great photos, thanks all! It was cloudy in the Muskegon area the whole day of the eclipse. But just before the show started, I was watching the visible satellite loop and saw a pretty good-sized hole in the cloud cover, and indeed the skies opened for us to see the whole event. And not very long afterward, the clouds returned. Talk about good luck!

I don't usually enjoy being "mooned" but these photos are fantastic!
