When Barb Bouwkamp sent in today's photos, she mentioned that they are some of her favorite places in the Keweenaw. I have to agree, they're definitely at the top of my list, also, especially because the first two are so well known as landmarks of the area.
If you have lived here or visited often, you instantly recognize where the photos were taken when you see the Quincy Mine Hoist up on the hill and then Barb snapped it when it was lit up in memory or in honor of someone one evening. It sure stands out against the night sky with the floodlights on it like that. If you're interested in lighting it up, you can find more info about that here: QuincyMine.com.
Another instantly recognized landmark here in the Copper Country is the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. Again, Barb captured a night shot with this landmark, as the sun was going down. I really like the arc of light there on the horizon, along with the glowing sky in this shot.
Barb's last photo was taken as she was driving past Rice Lake on 9/11. She wasn't sure who's dock the flag was on, but she said it was only there that day and then gone the next. Amazing how a simple, quiet act of reverence can grab someone's attention and remind us all to never forget those that were lost that day. This just shows that the Keweenaw remembers

Great pictures of placid waters today. Love the sunset with the bridge. Serenity reigns, and sometimes rains.

No matter what time of day or year, Quincy will always be one of those recognisable symbols of the Keweenaw and its past. Every time Nat and I come back for a visit, we always know we've made it home when we see Quincy in the distance whether it be from a car or on a plane; it truly is a very calming experience!!
