Judy Byykkonen loves taking walks in the woods any time of year, but her recent September evening walk yielded a group of beautiful reminders of what the beginnings of fall here UP North look like. It's the time of year when the apples are ripe for picking, as you can see by Judy's pick of photos... they look like you could just reach into the photo and grab one. There's nothing like a juicy apple right off the tree.
Even though we're to the end of flower blooming time, Judy was able to find a pretty one still gracing the landscape. My first thought was a brown-eyed Susan, but looking closer, I don't think it is, the brown center is different and I think there are fewer petals, too. Anyone know what this flower is called?
Then Judy's last photo is what fall here in the Copper Country is known for... the beauty of the changing leaves, coloring the countryside. It is only the beginning, with a few here and there, but it's a reminder of what is to come in the next month or so.

I find the photos of the apples with their rosy red cheeks particularly appealing. All great photos this morning.

We used to have a tree that produced apples like in the first photo, and I often pulled one as I rode by on my lawn tractor. It was always so yummy. Unfortunately a storm took down the tree a few years ago.:(

Love fall in the Keweenaw! Those apples are delicious picked off the tree while on a walk. Pick a bucket full, and make the porch smell so good! I've made applesauce with cinnamon with these in the fall - yummy!

Greta, you reminded me of something from my past. Many years ago I had a granddaddy who lived in an old log house which had a 'dog-trot' between the two sections, and he had pear and apple trees on his property, so he'd gather buckets of both fruits and let them sit in that open space and it always smelled soooo good!

Those apples look like they could be Northern Spies. Even with all the new varieties those are still my favorites for everything from eating fresh, to sauce, to pies (mixed with Cortlands).

Shirley, glad to hear you've experienced that wonderful aroma too!! Sounds like your granddaddy had a nice peaceful place.

Oh it was, Greta. It was so peaceful that all you could hear were the birds and the babbling little creek that ran through the property. Of course this was back in the 1950s. Granddaddy passed away shortly thereafter. Today that part of middle TN has become prime land for the 'modern country music' singers/musicians to build their mansions. But when I was growing up it was our 'country' where we visited homefolks.

Shirley, I was wondering where your Granddaddy's place was. The way you described it, I heaved a sigh and relaxed. Time marches on, and therefore so does change. If only we could slow it down.

Greta, it was in Williamson Co., about 8 miles outside Franklin, TN. It is a beautiful part of mmiddle TN, so I can see why so many wanted to build there. And yes, it sure changed.
