Eric Stewart said he didn't shoot many photos on his most recent trip to the Keweenaw, but he did get out in his kayak to snap a few shots around Eagle Harbor. If you've never been in a kayak, it's always a unique experience to get out on the water and view familiar sights from the water's edge and today's photos give you just that view.

First of the Lighthouse and grounds, just a different angle with the rock formations in front and then in the second photo, you can see what used to be a dock off the tip there in the Harbor. Eric said the dock was destroyed this past November during a storm and that it hadn't "changed a lick" since at least 1960 before that storm hit. Even inside the Harbor like this, Superior can do plenty of damage when she's all riled up.

Eric's last photo is right in front of the Lifesaving Museum at the Eagle Harbor Marina, which he says has been dredged in preparation for the launch of the restored surfboat. How interesting that it's been fixed up and they'll actually put it out there on the water again. I don't have any particulars on when that might be, so if anyone else does, please chime in.

Great scenery.

Just terrific pictures. It's for sure one of my
very favorite places to be. Don't know where I'd
rather live, Eagle Harbor or Eagle River. I
totally love them both!

Does anyone know the building in the left of the first picture?

Looks like a nice place to spend a night or two. Is it private or is it a B&B or Inn?

Very nice pix...quiet & relaxing. I can almost hear the waves splashing on the side of the kayak.

Thank you for the kayak adventure!

Tomfromthesoo,

The building is the Lake Breeze B & B:

Lake Breeze Resort
299 E. North Street
Eagle Harbor, MI 49950
Phone: 906-289-4514

We stayed there several years ago and really enjoyed our room and the location. The building has a lot of history!

Here's some more input about the Lake Breeze:

In Eagle Harbor, the luckiest people stay at the 1859 Lake Breeze, which its owners have gracefully brought into the present without sacrificing character.

On the lake, it sits at the edge of the rocky shoreline; around the corner, a long covered porch faces the harbor. Above the entrance, a birch log carries the motto, "Park Your Cares Outside."

Kayaks are parked on the grass, near overflowing flower boxes and '50s-style metal chairs on which guests can watch for the eagles that nest across the harbor. Inside, the aroma of balsam fir fills the tiny lobby, and friends meet beside the fire to play cards or gaze at the lake through picture windows.

Only a small sign at the edge of an unpaved drive points to the 10-room lodge, where a hedge surrounds a small parking area. Raley and Kvale barely advertise, but people find them anyway.

Angela Tornes of Milwaukee first saw the lodge from the water, when she was helping develop the Keweenaw Water Trail for the National Park Service. She and her husband, Mike Budnik, have vacationed there for years.

"I thought, 'Well, this looks interesting,'" she said. "It's enchanting, the way it's obscured, all the natural things."

Hey, JBuck -

Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind for future reference.

It could work out well on our next trip up there.

Tom
