Tomorrow morning at 7am the annual tradition at the Straits of Mackinac will again be enjoyed by thousands. It was a much smaller crowd in 1958, in this rare photo of the very first Bridge Walk. The guy out in front appears to be saying, "Runners, take your marks!"

The second shot is one we featured a few years ago, that came to mind this morning while looking for today's Shoebox Memory. Not one of the official walkers, apparently being escorted by some of the officials. If you've never visited the massive digital archive of Mackinac Bridge Authority photos, it's a real treat.

have a great walk everybody

My husband always wanted to do the 'walk', but he didn't relish being in big crowds, so he never made it.

I've always wanted to be there for that and have
never made it. I thougth about that first thing
this morning, wishing I could be there. Thanks
for bringing me there.

After 4 years of driving passed the walkers on the Bridge on the way to NMU on Labor Day, i finally made the walk myself a couple times. Stayed at the family place in Antrim County, got up at 4am, and drove to the bus loading area by about 5:30am to ride across to St. Ignace. That was quite a while ago, and since the crowds have grown and the logistics have become more complicated, it is less appealing now. But it was a good time back in the day!

At this writing, I'm turning my TV on at 4:30 to see if the walk is still on, because my wife heard it may be called off because of thunderstorms. I hope not, because this will be my 7th time, and didn't do the International Bridge Walk this year.
