Interesting Sunday morning in the Straits:

Status: Bridge Closed - High Winds
Sunday Aug 2nd 10:38 AM

Currently we are experiencing winds of sufficient force in the Straits area to close the Mackinac Bridge to all vehicles. Winds are blowing across the bridge surface in excess of 65 miles per hour.

Motorists are being instructed to reduce their speed to 20 miles per hour as they approach the bridge and be prepared to stop. Bridge personnel are stationed at both ends of the structure to provide instructions.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring wind conditions at various points along the structure. When conditions improve, the bridge will be reopened. If you are planning to travel to the Straits area, please tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for updates.

Jbuck, I checked the bridge cams earlier this morning and it looked like escorts were being used then, so I'm not surprised to hear that it is now closed. I for one wouldn't want to cross that bridge in high winds.:O

We were on the bridge as it was being closed about 2 hours ago. Trailers overturned in each direction. Extremely windy and rainy. very tough conditions.

Just checked the bridge cam and it's back up and showing traffic is moving once again, but looks like it's pouring rain.

Very great pictures, today, but I just love the
bear. And that dog riding an inner tube is
adorable.

I have friends from MN heading toward the Straits
but I doubt they'll be there yet. I tried to give
them as many things to see on the way as possible,
so I'm hoping they won't get there until tomorrow
or Wed. I've been on that bridge in the winter
when it was terribly windy and they closed it not
too long after we crossed. It's scary!
