While Ron and Deb Simons were exploring over in Ontonagon County, they stayed in Silver City, where they spotted the trailers in the top two photos. The Marquette Biological Management team were there working on the rivers in Ontonagon County, one being the Firesteel, to protect Lake Superior from the invasive Sea Lampreys.

In case you can't read the info on the side of the blue trailer, it says:

• Sea lampreys invaded the Great Lakes from the Atlantic Ocean.
• A single Sea lamprey can kill 40 pounds of fish.
• Sea lamprey control protects our $7 billion fishery.
• Everyone benefits from a healthy fishery.

It's a constant battle.
Would that be the Americinn hotel...have stayed there several times while visiting the Porcupines.

That last photo is really beautiful.

The lake looks a little bit grumpy. Not to bad though. Nice to see the sea lamprey wagons are at work. Thanks for sharing.

into the great lakes was of real concern in the
50's. at that time, concern of the declining
lake trout population prompted the dnr
to prohibit the taking of lake trout.
lake trout (soft skinned) are a favorite
target of the lamprey.

glad to see the dnr's efforts are paying off
and the lake trout population is increasing.

Alex, it was the AmericInn. I really loved the place. They were having water heater problems, but were very good about giving discounts, etc. I'd stay there again for sure. And Duane, we should have sent Mary the picture of me sitting on the beach when the lake was like that because I had a sweatshirt, jacket, jeans and a blanket. The wind off of the lake was very cold that night. But we don't get to enjoy it often enough so toughed it out. Beautiful lake. And it was so good to see those people out there trying to protect our fish. They said they'd gotten quite a few of those nasty lamprey. As we drove past the Firesteel on our way to Lake Linden, one of their trucks was parked there.

Lake Superior, she never takes a bad photo. I personally want to thank everyone for contributing their beautiful photos of the many beautiful areas of the U.P. These photos are what make up a huge part of my husband Bob and my brothers annual Lake Superior motorcycle vacation destinations, which happens all next week. Perhaps with Bob's photos I will be able to contribute to Pasty Cam in the near future!

Something tells me this job would really suck! :P

We saw the trailers parked in Munising a couple weeks ago fueling up at the Shell as we drove by. Kudos to this group for taking a stand against this unwanted invader!!

So many invasive species, Alewife, Lamprey,
Zebra and Quagga mussels and now the latest
threat, the Asian Carp.

Salmon were introduced to combat the alewife
and now the alewife is so reduced there are not
enough to support the recreationally sought
after salmon.

Ohgosh! Seriously, Mary? Nice!!
