Shirley, our Founding Fathers had a golden opportunity to get slavery abolished in 1776 because in the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence was a paragraph criticizing King George III's allowing blacks to be brought to the 13 colonies against their will, but some delegates would not approve the D of I unless that paragraph was removed. The rest is history.
