This past Friday the skies over the Keweenaw were clear with just a few wispy clouds, to the view the Blue Moon that skywatchers were treated too. The first four photos here today are of that moon, from two different Pasty Cammers.
Jim Ziemnick is new to the Pasty Cammer list, but he's been mentioned on these pages before, when he's been on adventures with his wife, Joy and their dog Diesel. Jim was up early to snap the first two shots of the moon over the "breakies" lighthouse, also known as the Upper Entry Lighthouse near McLain State Park. What an amazing view of the moon, the lighthouse and Lake Superior, too.
The next two "blue moon" shots, come to us from Taana Kalliainen and were taken from the Lower Entry, near Chassell and White City. If you look closely at her second photo #actually the 4th photo#, you can see a fishing boat in the lower left corner…look directly behind the boat and you'll see a dark spot in the water. Taana said that was a fish jumping and shortly after she took this picture, they had it in the boat. Pretty neat!
The bottom photo was captured by Brenda Leigh in the Brimley area. It isn't a blue moon, in fact it isn't a moon at all, but the sun setting instead. The size and color is amazing just the same, so I had to include it with the moon shots today.
And just in case you're not sure what a blue moon is, I found two definitions:
1. The third full moon in an astronomical season with 4 full moons #versus the normal 3# 2. The second full moon in a month with two full moons.
You can read more about this astronomical happening, including the fact that if it actually looks blue, it's because of a rare type of dust in the atmosphere, right here: What is a Blue Moon?

Yes, we were checking that beautiful Mon out also, but didn't take a picture. How dumb was that? These are beautiful and that fish jumping like that was icing on the cake. Brenda's picture is more how we saw it...huge! Great pictures!

Very nicely captured pix...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon. (Floyd)

Thank you Jim, Taana, and Brenda, for 'shooting the moon' for those of us who didn't see it!

Those are great pictures of our neighbor the moon. It is so big I can almost see the footprints. Thanks for sharing boys and girls.

Blue Moon Over Kentucky by Patsy Cline is a good one too.

Awesome photos of the Blue Moon! Glad it wasn't clouded up so these could be captured. A Blue Moon is always a special event. The beer's not too bad either!!

The final photo is of the sun...
However - they are all beautiful photos! Thank you for sharing. :)
Mary says: You are absolutely correct! Good spotting. I'll change that in my notes.
