Quite an array of butterflies here today and thanks to Joy Ziemnick's newest interest lately, I didn't have to search for names of any of them. Joy said, she's been out capturing butterflies and then trying to I.D. them. By "capturing", of course we mean with her camera, which means no actual butterflies were harmed during this study. She recently acquired a book called "Butterfiles of the North Woods", a gift from her husband, and Joy said it has great picture descriptions in it that help to identify the many different winged beauties she's been spotting. When all else fails, she's been getting some help from a Tech professor who has been a butterfly fan for a long time.
I've seen some of these flying around myself, but there are a few that I've not seen before. It's nice to have a still shot of them like these to really get a good look at their coloring and markings.
Joy's last photo is an interesting plant she found in their back woods. It's called Indian Pipes and Joy said it lacks chlorophyll, so it doesn't make food for itself like other green plants, but gets nourishment from decaying plant material, through a mutually beneficial fungal relationship. You can find more information about this plant and the how it grows, here: Everything you wanted to know about Indian Pipes.

The pictures of the butterflies are spectacular! And the Indian Pipes are fascinating; have only seen them 'in the wild' once!

These pix are fantastic...excellent color and clarity, and not just the subjects, but the surrounding background as well...everything blends together so well. You definitely have a good eye, Joy.

Absolutely beautiful. I love butterflies. Sort of like the Keweenaw's own version of Mackinac Island's Butterfly House.

Great photos of the flutterbys today. At least three of which I've not seen. I agree with Thomas, The Butterfly House on Mackinac Island has an amazing collection. It is a place that Joy would probably like to see if she hasn't already. I don't know the name of it but I saw a pure black one last time I was there.
