Late-in-the-day report: Repairs of Houghton
Monument in Eagle River finally get underway.

More to report tomorrow (which comes up in just a
few minutes)

Have a good week :o)

I wonder what kind of repairs......have to wait and see.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 12:30 am:

I predict some serious sandblasting or chiseling, based on that green Sullair compressor parked there.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 06:43 am:

Looks like they really have the tarp secured well against any type of weather. Nice to see the repairs happen before it was literally falling apart!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 07:50 am:

It'll be nice to see what it looks like
afterwards. Nice to see that being done.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 08:21 am:

Hope all goes well and the weather cooperates.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 11:16 am:

Who's paying for the repairs; just curious?

Noticed that back on June 2, 2002 this entry was made on Pasty Cam about the monument:

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, June 2, 2002 - 01:58 pm:

Four years ago on the Pasty Cam we mentioned the need for repairs on the memorial monument at Eagle River. Some of the stones were falling out, and the structural integrity weakening. Many Camwatchers responded to that need, with over $2,000 coming in to Still Waters for the work.

In the summer of '98 Jeff Heikkinen of Mohawk was contracted for the repairs, and the funds which were left over went toward a Pasty Cam lifetime membership in the Keweenaw County Historical Society. The monument's life has been extended, thanks to the support of all who helped.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 03:11 pm:

Maybe they had another fund raiser to fix it again? Not finding any mention of that.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, July 27, 2015 - 03:17 pm:

Don't I remember some local stonemason doing some repairs to this Houghton Monument not so long ago? There were pictures posted of the repairs under way, too.

It had to be long after Jeff Heikkinen's repairs mentioned by jbuck, or perhaps that was a different monument?

Frnash, i bet you're remembering when they were looking for the time capsule:

Keweenaw County Historical Society

Still Searching: A group of MTU geophysics and industrial archaeology students are currently conducting research in Eagle River looking for evidence of the homes Pete Verdine, of one of the earliest African-American residents of the town. Yesterday KCHS member Michael Cooper met the students and explained our fruitless search last summer for the time capsule that was buried in the Douglass Houghton monument. Mike convinced the students to extend their day of fieldwork and to use their ground penetrating radar to see if the capsule was somehow buried in front of the monument rather than inside of it. Sadly the capsule as not found but the students learned a lot about Douglass Houghton and the KCHS can cross off one more possible hiding place for the capsule.

On the Pasty Cam page for August 28, 2014 you can see our very own Charlie Hopper wielding a chisel to open the monument to look for the time capsule.

Bingo!

See (click →) Cam Notes Mar 21-06: Tuesday-What'sUP. Scroll down to see the picture of the repairs under way. However, it's not entirely clear whether the repairs (picture) were accomplished in 1998 or later. (?)

(Maybe my mind isn't going quite yet!) 😉
