Interesting pictures and story from Michele Mukavetz today. I'll let her tell the story as it unfolded for her that evening.

"These are the baby falcons that were born in the nest on the Hancock side of the bridge. They have a nest on both towers and this is the first year they used the north side tower-nest.

It was around 8pm that we found out one of the falcons fell out of the nest and that at first nobody could find the baby. Then we found out that someone had picked up the bird and was going to put it back in the nest. Bill and I went and sat over there to see if we could get a picture of the falcon before it was put back up there. We sat there until 10pm…no bird, so we left.

We then found out that the person who had picked up the falcon had taken it to the Vet to have it checked out. The baby was fed some chicken and returned that night to the nest. The person was told not to put the baby back in the nest, but just to put it up there near the nest, so that is why you see the one baby outside of the nesting box.

I think perhaps the baby was blown off the nest because it was very windy that day. The person, who ended up rescuing the falcon chick was a vet and had either found or was told that the baby falcon was in the grass, under a bush by the condos right next to the Portage Lift Bridge and that it was actually being attacked by bigger birds.

The next day I got my camera and took these pictures. You can see the Falcon still sitting there on the ledge where the Vet had placed him. It was fun to watch them through the binoculars.

That young Falcon is sure lucky that someone noticed it had fallen from the nest and that it hadn't gotten hurt on the way down, as that's quite a height to drop from. I wonder if it has some flying skills already and was able to at least glide down safely then. I'd be curious to find out when or if it was able to get back up in the nest, too. Maybe Michele can fill us in a bit more here today!

Very interesting story. That would have been
something to be a part of. Great pictures, and I
love the last picture of the lift bridge. I
always love pictures of the lift bridge.

Thanks, Michele!

Live Cams...sounds like a good MTU project. When the nests empty, they can be pointed up / down the canal.

it would have been nice if we could have seen the baby up close, as the person brought it back but, after 2 hours of waiting, we left. then we found out the person that had the bird was told to just put the bird up there, but do not put it back in the nest. from what I understand....it sounds like the kids took off now.

did anybody read the story of the oldest eagle was killed. it was 38 yrs. old and was hit by a car, I believe, in new York while it was eating roadkill. it was banded.

Nice feature story.

That's a great idea, Alex! MTU could host that
camera, and let it look towards the canal when the
birds aren't available!

from what I was told, the birds are still hanging out around the nest. I need to get back down there to see if I can see them.
