Nathan Miller doesn't just snap U.P. pictures, he makes photo taking an adventure. His latest adventure took him by kayak, out to Mackinac Island and Round Island.
I'll let him tell you about this excursion himself:
"I left from St. Ignace and made the roughly 5 mile trip over to downtown Mackinac Island, where I stopped for lunch and to see some sights. Too busy for me! I then made the crossing over to Round Island, where I flew my kite at the lighthouse and above passing freighters (that's the American Spirit pictured above). The island is classified as a wilderness area of the Hiawatha National Forest and was very wild - I did some exploring of the forest there and didn't make it too far it was so thick. Another day! I camped on the shoreline overlooking Mackinac Island and watched the fireworks when they shot them off in the evening.
Two of the shots are not taken with my kite. One is of my kayak at sunset on Round Island, with the lighthouse in the distance. The other is from my paddle back on a very peaceful morning on the lake, catching the first ferry of the day heading out from Mackinac Island on its way back to the mainland. The Grand Hotel is in the background. I also chased a freighter and saw many other sights along the way on 6 mile paddle home. I'd definitely do this trip again!"
I asked Nathan about camping on Round Island and he said that he packed all he'd need in his sea kayak. His gear consisted of a single person tent and a little camp stove, nothing fancy was his reply. He figures overall, he had more space taken up by his kite gear.
