Until I saw these photos from Ryan Byykkonen, I didn't realize there was a Russian Orthodox Church in Atlantic Mine. So now we all know it's there and we get a peek inside, too. After doing a little research, I found that SS Sergius and Herman of Valaam Orthdox Church has been serving the Keweenaw since 1995, in the former St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Their parish is part of the Diocese of Chicago and Midwest of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).

It's a beautiful church with the stained glass windows, the many icons displayed and the shiny wood floor. Ryan did a great job capturing the beauty of the windows depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. The colors are so vivid and bright, quite a focal point of the little church.

This church used to be St. Mary Star of The Sea
Catholic church. Hurontown, Dodgeville people
would attend mass there. Polka Mass in which the
priest would do mass along with music provided by
Bill Stimac's Polka Band.

I attended SS Sergius and Herman when I was a college student at MTU back when the church started. It has come a long ways since the opening of the Orthodox Church back in the later 90's.

Wow this was literally less than 100 yards from my house in
Atlantic Mine and I never went there.

Beautiful church.

By Father Alexander (Fr_alexander) on Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 03:59 pm:

That is a pleasant surprise to see our church featured here. I
notice a guest book entry a couple weeks ago that I didn't
recognise. Thank you Ryan. If you want to see the church with
your own eyes, our church is open for prayer normally during the
day. And everyone is always invited to attend our services.

Thank you again
Fr. Alexander
Rector of SS Sergius and & Herman of Valaam Orthodox Church
