Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 07:33 am:

The Paavola Wetlands Nature Area is located just north of Hancock on US41, part of the Keweenaw Land Trust Protected Lands. Joy Ziemnick and camera were there recently walking on some of the trails checking out the beaver pond and the various flowers along the way.

She spotted a few that I have never heard of before, like the Nodding Triullium and the Blue-Eyed Grass, along with the Wild Calla Lily, which I knew existed, but had never seen in the wild, just as a houseplant.

Her photo of the blue dragon fly on the lily pad reminds me of when I was a kid. Someone told me that it was called a "sewing needle" and that if it landed on me, would stitch away on my skin. For years I was afraid of those things, until I got a bit older and realized they had been pulling my leg.

Very nice...the clarity and quality of these photos just keeps getting better and better.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 08:37 am:

I agree, Alex.
Beautiful, Joy!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 08:56 am:

Beautiful pictures!! Love the trillium and the
canna lilies! And I can just hear the frogs
croaking!

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 08:58 am:

Gorgeous photos! Thank you Joy!

By George Kahoun (Bkahouna) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 09:25 am:

Are these wetlands located behind the cemetary just past sweedtown creek?

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 09:49 am:

WOW!!! Now I know what's growing out back..the
nodding trillium..and I had no idea Calla Lilies grew
in water..much less U.P. here! FABULOUS!!!

I got told dragonflies would sew your eyes shut,
but never believed it lol because they were such
cool insects! (I'm not afraid of spiders, snakes
or anything)
Such lovely pictures today! Rarely have I seen
bogs, lilie pads etc

Hi
The name Paavola wetland made me wonder about the wetlands in Finland, and whether there are any species in common.

By Just me (Jaby) on Thursday, June 18, 2015 - 02:53 pm:

Outstanding photos. I enjoyed each one very much!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 08:46 am:

Beautiful photos! Just don't understand how talking about these pictures in the U.P. with friends boring? So sad!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 10:27 am:

to me, nobody is 'talking' about the photos, they are just saying they like them.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 10:43 am:

i stand corrected....there are other comments, about the pictures, other than just saying i like the pictures. i like below the bridge comment. i never heard that one and i like the way geaorge asked a question, that has not gotten a response yet. it is interesting to hear and read other things, too. ;O)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 12:33 pm:

My bathroom is decorated with dragonflies. But then I also like, bats, butterflies, spiders, and jellie fishes and seahorses! Sorta weird hey? Besides the usual kitties and puppies. Btw I used to know a place in Door County where there were either double or triple trilliums! I wonder if they're still there?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 01:04 pm:

I love bats, too. where we lived downstate there was a science center that had all kinds of bats for people to come thru and see and hear the stories of them. I could not get bill to go see them. I love the huge bats that eat fruit (fruit bats)

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 01:55 pm:

Mary, I was told the same story about "sewing needles" when I was a young kid. That's what I called them, and believed they'd sew on my skin too. I also heard the sew your eyes shut one.
So funny!!! LOL!!
Nice pics - love that beaver dam!

By Joy Ziemnick (Sisugirl1) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 04:05 pm:

George (Bkahouna), sorry about my slow response to your question. The road to access the trail(s) is about 1.5 mi. N. of the Quincy Mine off U.S. 41. You would turn right on No. 9 Rd. and 1st trail entry is after about .6 mi. on left and 2nd entry is maybe .3 miles after the 1st parking area. Are several trails to choose from and a nice map is at the 2nd entry.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 04:12 pm:

George, in checking the map; the creek in the area is Boston Creek and there doesn't appear to be a cemetery in the area.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 05:08 pm:

Excellent flower photos. I have never seen a nodding trillium or
blue-eyed grass in person. Are the blue flags blooming yet?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 07:08 pm:

Greta, I was told that "sewing needles" would sew
your mouths shut. I was terrified of them. Now I
have a son who is terrified of dragonflies and
tries to kill them. Makes me so mad because all
they're doing is eating the nasty insects that are
trying to bite you, lol. Parents! Why do they
tell their children these stories? But it is fun
to look back upon and have a good laugh!

By Joy Ziemnick (Sisugirl1) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 07:28 pm:

Kosk, the blue flag irises are out and pretty abundant now in the Copper Country area. One place to see them is at the Swedetown ponds just outside (W) of Calumet.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 08:31 pm:

I never heard about that with Dragonflies. Only bats will make a nest in your hair, toads will give you warts, and grasshoppers spit tobacco on you.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 09:19 pm:

Omgosh! The grasshopper one is hilarious! The
other 2 I've been told, lol!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, June 19, 2015 - 10:29 pm:

OMG!! LOL!!
Deb, if I would've heard they can also sew you're mouth shut I'd have been mega terrified!!
Parents....!!! I agree!! So hilarious!
And Janie T. I was also brought up with the tale of bats making a nest in your hair, that's why they dive at you (probably saving you from a mosquito bite in reality). Also the toads and warts, but the grasshoppers spitting tobacco at you is a new one and beyond hilarious. Can't stop laughing!!
These old tales are so funny, and sure do take me back!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 20, 2015 - 09:50 am:

Yes, it was a way to make us not want to stay out
at night with the bats. Parents aren't stupid,
lol. I was told that the bats were diving at you
and would either make a nest in your hair or
snatch your eye out, lol. As soon as I saw one I
wanted to head for my bedroom and jump under the
covers. Missed out on a lot of fun because of
that particular story, lol!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Saturday, June 20, 2015 - 03:15 pm:

Yeah, it's funny now, but it wasn't then!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, June 21, 2015 - 06:58 am:

Very natural.
