On a recent visit to the U.P., Cindy Freeman decided to go as far east as possible and still be in the Upper Peninsula. Drummond Island is where she ended up and also where she snapped these beautiful scenes.

You can see that the shores around Drummond Island are rocky, with quite a few bigger ones, but what really caught my eye in Cindy's photos, is the variety of color and designs. The fourth shot really accentuates some of the unique patterns in the rocks there. It sure looks like a great place to sit and de-stress from your everyday worries and routines. Can you hear those waves rolling in?

Would love to dive into those waters right now ~ and miss all the interesting rocks of course!

Looks peaceful...very nice!

Very nice and colorful array of rocks. I haven't been to Drummond Island for a long time. It is on my to do list for this summer.

These pictures today rock!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 5, 2015 - 03:17 pm:

Those rocks in the photos are not native to Drummond Island. The island is totally made up of limestone/dolomite. These rocks are from Ontario and were likely carried to their current location by the glaciers.

Anyone notice the puddingstone??

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, June 5, 2015 - 03:44 pm:

Way cool and WOW...I cheated and read the wiki
version of puddingstone! WOW...Thanks Capt. Paul!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, June 5, 2015 - 05:17 pm:

Very cool - when i saw the pictures of the rocks i thought it was odd they would be on Drummond Island but had no idea about the rest of the story. And also 'cheated' and looked up puddingstone; found out Cheboygan used to have a puddingstone festival!

These pictures are great!!!!

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 07:20 am:

It felt good to see that my photos were featured for the pics of the day yesterday. We were on vacation in the middle of May and during that week I took 450 photos in places from Whitefish Bay down to Cheboygan. It is relaxing and fun to walk along the shore and take pictures of the rocks and the waves wherever we go. That good feeling started to fade when I read some of the comments. Capt. Paul, when you stated that these rocks were not native to Drummond, I panicked! I have only begun to edit all of my pics, but I uploaded some photos to my Pasty gallery last week. I went back to my original photos to figure out the exact day we were on Drummond, and discovered that these pics were NOT my Drummond pics! I know that puddingstone is found on Drummond, and when I uploaded the photos, I truly believed it was Drummond Island. I finally determined that these photos were actually taken along the eastern shoreline below Mackinaw City to Cheboygan. I made a huge mistake, and I feel awful about it. I apologize to Mary, Capt. Paul and everyone else for my error, and I hope you understand that it was not intentional.

Blue lake and rocky shore.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 07:48 am:

Don't worry about it Cindy... it was an honest mistake and the pictures are still beautiful and nearly taken in the U.P.
Kudos to Capt. Paul for picking up on it. The majority of us wouldn't know, especially if you've never been to Drummond Island.
Again...not a problem at all.  :-D

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 07:57 am:

No problem, Cindy...the pix are still fantastic.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 09:07 am:

Cindy, please don't feel bad about this!! The pictures stirred discussion, educated us, and reminded us that WE aren't the only ones who take so many pictures they are sometimes hard to keep track of. LOL!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 09:15 am:

I didn't intend to cause any panic Cindy; no apologies necessary. I just meant that rocks of that type do not naturally outcrop on Drummond Island and that the glaciers carried them there and then once the ice melted, dropped them at or near their current location. The same process would have also dropped rocks of those types along the shores of Lake Huron between Mackinaw and Cheboygan.

I also understand the confusion when taking that many photos. Over the course of a 2-3 week trip, it's nothing for me to shoot 1500-2000 photos so keeping track of all those can be tough. Usually Nathalie keeps a fieldbook of all the places we visit so it makes it easier to see where we've been and what photos were taken. I'm sure we'll shoot just as many photos when we're UP next month for a couple weeks.

From now on, I'll just ooh and ahh over the pretty photos and stop being such a curmudgeon!!! ;-)

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 09:34 am:

You guys are the best! I feel so much better!I'm glad there are others who are addicted to their cameras! Isn't it fun? I do need to be more organized when the pics come off the cards, however. Capt. Paul, my next question was going to ask you how those rocks appeared on Lake Huron where I took them, but you answered that for me already. That black/red puddingstone is really quite large and buried mostly in the sand. It's probably still there because it's too heavy to carry out. By the way, you are not a curmudgeon! Have a great day, everyone!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 10:36 am:

Hmmm, i'm thinking a curmudgeon would have reacted more like: "you obviously don't know what you're talking about; you must have mixed up your photos!!"

So since that wasn't the case Capt Paul is not allowed in the Curmudgeon Club.

Now it will be even more exciting to see the actual pictures from Drummond Island!!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - 01:22 pm:

I guess we need cameras that include GPS data in the "EXIFinfo" for each image, and perhaps an image viewer that could drop a pin on a map based on those GPS coordinates. I know that would be very helpful for me!

Hmmm, I see that the "EXIFinfo" does include the following:

Quote:

GPS information: -
GPSVersionID - 2.3.0.0

So apparently all we need is a camera that will fill it in!
